1987 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 IROC-Z

  • Sought after IROC-Z trim
  • Facelift 1987 model
  • 5-litre V8, automatic transmission
  • Desirable optional 305TPI engine
  • Comprehensive history file

The Appeal

Handsomely proportioned with some smart detailing and charismatic V8 drivetrains, the third generation Camaro is an increasingly desirable machine. While the emissions regulations of the 70s and 80s may have strangled those V8s a bit, they respond very well to some basic modifications, which free up more power and give the burly coupé the kind of performance you’d expect.

This is an example of one such vehicle, benefitting from some choice performance modifications and presented in the desirable IROC-Z trim level. Add to that the lift-out glass targa panels, handsome colour scheme and rarity value – certainly on UK roads – and you have something that really can stop traffic. If you’re after the kind of vehicle that elicits smiles and thumbs up at every turn, while also shaking windows with its mighty V8, then this is for you.

The Interior

  • Red vinyl upholstery, with red fabric to the seat faces

  • The fabric elements and carpets appear to be in good order, with light wear showing, but no tears or notable damage we could see
  • The red vinyl door cards are exhibiting some crazing and cracking
  • Modern Kenwood head unit with USB port
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • The switchgear and instrumentation all looks to be in reasonable condition, with some light wear and blemishing as you would expect
  • There does appear to be some glue or resin residue present on the plastic cover for the speedometer
  • The original storage bag for the roof panels is present and correct in the rear
  • We’re told by the vendor that everything works as it should, with no faults reported

The Exterior

  • Black paintwork with gold IROC-Z graphics – believed to have been repainted at some point and presented in average condition, with some marks and blemishes
  • Overall, the bodywork appears to be in pretty good condition, with no evidence of corrosion we could see
  • We noted a large dent to the driver’s door, although it doesn’t appear to have cracked the paint, and a smaller dent to the passenger door
  • The upper sections of the inner doors are damaged, the driver’s side appears to have been poorly repaired, while the passenger side remains holed
  • The car is wearing US style show plates, although a set of UK road legal plates are also included
  • 16-inch, five-spoke, two-tone alloy wheels show well, with no notable damage or lacquer peel we could discern, they are shod with Nexen CP641 tyres to the front and BFGoodrich tyres to the rear
  • Underneath looks very clean and tidy, with no damage or corrosion we could see to the floors, sills or drivetrain – it all looks solid and nicely kept

The Mechanics

  • Optional 305TPI, 5-litre (305ci) naturally aspirated V8, driving the rear wheels
  • Automatic transmission
  • We’re told by the vendor that many drivetrain components have been renewed and refreshed
  • Upgrades including: MSD coil pack, 8mm Summit performance HT leads, BBK 58mm throttle body, Jegs subframe connectors, new brake callipers, new rear dampers and polybush set
  • Custom 3-inch stainless steel exhaust system with Headman headers and Y-pipe
  • We’re assured by the vendor that the car starts, runs and drives very well, with no issues or mechanical problems they are aware of

Presented here with some very welcome mechanical upgrades and improvements, this Z28 is everything you want from an 80s US muscle car – stylish, dramatic and eye-catching. With a little attention to the cosmetics, this could soon be a very fine example indeed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 3-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000 to £100,000 £500.00
£100,000+ £1000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you’re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
