The 1959 Corvette is an iconic and sought after vehicle. It has the 350 cu inch V8 engine with dual exhausts giving that characteristic American muscle car sound. It has a 4-speed manual gearbox. The car has been repainted in the original red/ white and has a black soft top which stows away behind the front seats. The body panels are fibreglass from new and the car has a steel chassis which is rust free. It is in all round excellent condition and it drives excellently. For a car of that era the performance, braking and handling is outstanding, and would put many of todays cars to shame. The steering although heavy on parking is full of fell on the road, and the car attracts as much attention as any other we have owned.
The information about the car is confirmed by an appraisal from Jim Winter Collectable Car Appraisals in December 2016. From that we can report that it is a 1959 Model 800 Corvette, built at the St Louis, Missouri assembly plant. It is number 372.
The engine is a 350ci which was built at St Catherines, Ontario in September 2011. The number is K0911C8K. This is a replacement engine and is fitted with an Edelbrock carb and Edelbrock aluminium intake manifold. Because the height is greater than the original engine and carburettor, the car has a Thunderbolt hood scoop fitted, and an uprated HEI distributor and a new alternator. The engine runs very well and the 4-speed gearbox is in good working condition.
The car is in very good order, and its fibreglass bodyshell is in excellent condition. The recorded mileage is 29, 000. The grille and bumpers are original and are in very good condition. The chassis is original and in very good condition. The rev counter has been replaced and the speedometer – which is almost unobtainable – has been worked on by a UK specialist.
The conclusion of the appraisal from James Winter, the Curator of the British Columbia Transportation Museum is that this early Corvette is in overall good condition and the upgrades enhance the car’s appeal.
The car is tax exempt and MOT exempt.
