The Riley 9 was a best-seller from day one and proved successful on road and track in period and in later years. Today the Riley 9 is one of the most popular cars in the VSCC and is still a winner in the wide range of events for which it is eligible.
This 1932 Gamecock still has its original aluminium body, which in itself is a bit of marvel, but the car has also been subjected to a careful rebuild incorporating a number of period-style modifications which make it even more desirable.
Within the last few years it has had a new ash frame installed, a new crown wheel and pinion fitted and the ride height raised for improved ground clearance to make it more competitive in VSCC trials where it is classified as a Standard car, rather than Modified or Special.
A later, more powerful Merlin engine has been fitted (although the original will come with the car), the carburettors have been overhauled, a side exhaust fitted and the fuel tank raised – all with trials work in mind. Also, to this end, the brakes have been refurbished, the wiring checked over (with the inclusion of a battery master switch) and a fire-extinguisher fitted. The history file with this car shows that over the last five years in excess of £9, 000 has been spent on the car.
YY 747 now has a proven track record as a successful trials car, but also remains a great road car with lively performance and nimble handling. The overall appearance of the car cannot be faulted and the fact that is not a concours queen adds to its appeal.
