The Porsche 911 (996) Carrera is the successor of the 993 and the first 911 with a water-cooled 6-cylinder boxer engine. The Porsche 996 is the fifth generation in a further development of the original (air-cooled) 911. The water-cooled engine changed the characteristic exhaust sound of the Porsche. By adjusting the outlets, the engineers managed to produce a similar sound as with an air-cooled engine.
