Volkswagen's groundbreaking hot hot-hatch has been available in many guises since its debut in 1975 and fortunately I've had the pleasure of owning all bar the MK7, but without doubt my favourite was the MK2 8V model, mainly as it was my first company car at Jack Barclay.... being a newbie, mine was 'poverty spec', with no alloys, roof or electric windows, just central locking from memory, but I loved it !
The face lifted bigger bumper version appeared in 1990 but kept the brand/ style elements of the red detailing on the grill, golf ball gear knob and GTI badge from the MK1. The performance and pace was not far off the original's either, but it was a better car to drive and actually had brakes that worked!
This exceptional 1990 Tornado Red example is in wonderful original condition and after nearly 28 years there are just a few stone chips to the bonnet but no other blemishes to speak of, meanwhile, the very curbable BBS alloys are completely unmarked.
Having such light usage over the years, the interior is in quite remarkable condition, with the tartan cloth upholstery being virtually unmarked, plus when you open the doors, you are still confronted with that unique Golf smell !
Ownership since 1990 has been limited to just 3 keepers, with the first keeping the car until 2011, although driving it sparingly, he always made sure it was regularly maintained. Other than the years it has been Sorn, all Mots are present confirming the low mileage. There is a well documented history file including manuals, stamped service book plus its original 1990 order form.
Just serviced and motd by a leading VW specialist who was truly stunned by its overall originality and condition. If you are contemplating an early GTi of any description this exceptional example should without any doubt be on your short list.
