Welcome to the sale of this classic Mercedes SL280.
This 1983 Mercedes 280SL R107 6 cylinder has been with its current owner for the last seven years although in that time it has passed to his business partner and back again. Our client, the current owner, is the director of our local golf club. We was talking classic cars at the 19th hole when he mentioned this car may be available for sale.
It has been stored for some time and therefore we have now revived it from its slumber. Take a look at the MOT history online - all required work has been completed to get it up and running and it has covered very little mileage in the last 10 years.
It has in the last week had a service of oil, plugs and filters and been checked over by our mechanic before being presented for its MOT which it passed with one advisory of a blow in the centre exhaust which does need addressing. It has also had a machine polish and been under sealed. It is very solid throughout although the inner sill on the left hand side interior is showing some decay. The outer sills have been done in the last few years.
Finished in black and in overall good condition this classic R107 has come ok but the paint could be better above rear arches (which are solid) and on top of one front wing (which has a little 'orange peel'). A recorded 114k is very low mileage for the renown Mercedes six cylinder and indeed it has only covered 1100 miles since 2006.
It drives well for a 36 year old Mercedes of this era and wafts along the road. The auto gearbox and brakes are good and the interior presents well with a little wear on the drivers seat. It starts on the button. The dashboard is very good with one slight crack toward the window but it is hard to see. The cruise control does not currently operate and although the blower fans do work we have removed the fuse as they will not turn on and off from the dial switch - this may be due to the length of storage. When we dried out the fuse box everything works correctly - if it is left in the rain a trickle comes in and the electrics are a bit hit and miss such as the interior lights on the dash board are temperamental. There is some (minimal) water ingress on the drivers side which may be the issue with this.
We have looked at the A pillar area and it appears solid - you are welcome to inspect.
It comes with both the hard top and soft top. They are in excellent order and only today has the soft top been awoken which is in good order but does have some slight seem wear at the very top. The plastic windows are sound and clear. The key to operate the roof is also present.
Sadly there is no paperwork other than our receipts and the logbook/ MOT with the car. The Gold Car Check shows no issues with the car and it used to wear the number plate SXH 1 which can only be a sign of a fastidious owner. It has had 9 previous owners. Recent work also includes brakes, fuel pump, tyres and welding to the sills which has been done correctly. It also has a new battery.
These Mercedes are rising in value and finding one that needs a little work to make perfect is a good way into ownership. It is solid underneath so it is all cosmetic work to do should you require it. The rear wing tops are solid but do have some 'orange peeling' on the paint and there are a few marks here and there in the paint. It looks largely original but has had some paint on the front nearside wing at some point. It has no recorded or obvious accident damage. The spare wheel is missing but the original jack is with the car. The odometer has stopped working today after pressing the reset button but has been working between previous MOTs.
The car check certificate comes with the car. The door lock on the drivers side is not working but there are 3 keys with the car.
If you are in the market for an SL with more reasonable MPG than a 500 It is well worth a look as these car are becoming rare and it is ready to use but could be improved as required.
A sure fire investment here - the Pagoda models of only 15 years earlier are heading towards three figures. They really do not make them like this anymore.
Having spoke to the SL Shop yesterday any little bits and pieces for this car are available so it could easily be taken to the next level.
This car has an MOT and can be used but would benefit from some TLC so is being sold as a project.
