1931 AUSTIN 7
RL Saloon
TY 7860
This delightful garage find offers its new owner the opportunity to fully restore or gently resuscitate, an early example of the now rare, early short wheel base standard steel saloon.
Built in 1930 and first registered in 1931, it is complete with original green log book and current V5 in my name.
Although it has suffered from poor storage in certain areas, TY 7860 remains in very solid condition. With regard to the chassis and the majority of the bodywork, floors remain remarkably solid, the worst areas are where the roof of the barn was poor and as a result the A pillars where meeting the roof structure have suffered, that said a little time with the welder could see these areas easily addressed.
The engine looks to have been recently over-hauled, the tops of the pistons, exceedingly clean and photos on file indicate a rebuild in the not so distant past (circa 2011) , it has a modern Bosch type distributor. The engine turns over very nicely and seems to have good compression, although I have made no attempt to start the car, I would imagine with a little time, flush of the fuel tank/ new filter and change of fluids etc, it might well run readily.
The interior has been retrimmed in black vinyl and presents well with smart black carpets, headlining is ok, door cards sadly suffering from previous damp, all gauges are present and it has a nice set of correct R47 headlamps. The radiator holds water and the shell is in superb condition,
Sitting on correct 19inch wheels, cheg shin trials wheels on the rear with mismatched front tyres, front brakes are the improved Bowdenex type.
This rare swb rolling restoration offers a choice of possibilities and uses, from a rough trials car, through to a sympathetic, full restoration, although many might be tempted to convert it into an Ulster for which the swb chassis, is of course the right date and type, it would be nice to see it preserved and conserved, as these standard steel saloons, were produced for such a short time on the short wheel base chassis.
Whatever the restoration route, complete with V5 and sundry documents, it ought to provide much fun for its new owner.
