1960 AUSTIN HEALEY BUGEYE SPRITE FOR SALE
The Austin Healey Sprite is a small open sports car which was produced in the United Kingdom from 1958 to 1971. The Sprite was announced to the press in Monte Carlo by the British Motor Corporation on 20 May 1958. It was intended to be a low cost model that "a chap could keep in his bike shed", yet be the successor to the sporting versions of the pre-war Austin Seven. The Sprite was designed by Donald Healey, with production being undertaken at the MG factory at Abingdon. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and as many other components from existing cars as possible to keep costs down. The Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the frogeye in the UK and the bugeye in the US, because its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet. This gave the car its appeal as a result of its much loved cute appearance. The Sprite's chassis design was the world's first volume-production sports car to use unitary construction. The 43 bhp, 948 cc OHV engine was derived from the Austin A35 and Morris Minor 1000 models, also BMC products, but upgraded with twin 1 ?1?8 inch SU carburetors.
1960 Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite. As far as we know the engine and transmission is original to the vehicle. The car does run and drive, but does require a little bit of work to be driven on a regular basis. Previous owner bought the car for her husband as a birthday present. Engine has twin SU carburetors and the transmission is a four speed manual. This car has factory drum brakes on the front and rear. Since we have owned the vehicle we have done a little bit of work to it. We replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses, replaced the cylinder head gasket, thermostat gasket, etc. Has a new thermostat and also have a new thermostat housing. The vehicle has the original wheels with all four hubcaps. The spare tire is also included with the car.
The interior on the car is complete and in good condition. The gauges are all in place and the dash is uncut. Has an aftermarket stereo and there are two speakers behind the seats. The steering wheel was upgraded and the original steering wheel comes with the car. Previous owner put on new tires not long ago. Has the rare factory hard top and also has the tonneau cover, soft top frame, soft top, factory side curtains, etc. The windshield is in good condition and the glass for the hard top is the original triplex glass. Great little car that is a fun to drive.
