British Racing Green | Fixed Head Coupé | 4 Speed Manual | 4. 2 litre Straight 6 | 03563 miles showing | AU$249, 995
Introduced in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type was an instant sensation with its Le Mans prototype looks and a 150mph top speed.
It’s rare for a single model to cause such a stir but here was a civilised and affordable production sports car that looked like something from out of this world and could outperform just about anything else on the road.
The E-Type's design owed much to that of Jaguar’s racing D-Type: a monocoque tub forming the main structure while a lightweight tubular space frame extended forwards to support the engine and in-board disc brakes all worked together to give the car exceptional handling and balance.
And, fabled aerodynamicist, Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.
The E-Type had undergone significant changes by the time the Series 2 arrived in 1968 with the launch of the 4. 2 litre engine giving more usable low-down torque, a more user-friendly Moss gearbox with synchromesh on first gear, a superior Girling brake servo, larger mouth for improved air induction, a smaller steering wheel, thermo controlled twin cooling fans and more comfortable bucket seats that has today made it the most popular model amongst driving enthusiasts.
In it’s October, 1964 review Motor Magazine wrote “The new 4. 2 supersedes the early 3. 8 as the fastest car Motor has tested. The absurd ease which 100 mph (161 km/ h) can be exceeded in a 1?4 mile (402 m) never failed to astonish. 3, 000 miles (4, 828 km) of testing confirms that this is still one of the worlds outstanding cars".
