Completed in July of 1987, this Signal Red 420SL benefits from factory rear seats, trimmed in leather to match the front seats. This was an expensive option, and a desirable feature for any Mercedes-Benz SL.
Sold by SLSHOP in 2016, this car has been known to us for a number of years.
For the Mercedes-Benz SL connoisseur, a low mileage SL is the holy grail… but what marks a low mileage, original SL out from the crowd?
Inside the cabin that distinct ‘new’ scent still lingers, whilst the seats show no wear on the bases or bolsters front or rear. There is are distinct differences between an original factory interior from a well cared for low mileage car, a restored car and a well used car. The switchgear and dashboard are immaculate and fresh, this means no rubbing or evidence of use on any of the buttons or controls… often the white icons on the window switches and indicator stalks become faded and worn, but with a factory fresh, low mileage car the print of these symbols is crisp against the black plastic. Similarly the speedometer dials are vivid, the oranges and whites of the display are bright and fresh, further signs of good storage and a car that has been kept away from the damaging rays of the sun.
This 420SL fires into life exactly as an SL should, the newness of the car becoming apparent as soon as Drive is engaged. Jump in this car and drive it alongside any other SL and the tightness of the steering, the suspension, the feel of the controls and the way the car responds is completely different to a high mileage car. Inspect the woodwork on the inside of the cabin and the chrome, you’ll find no pitting, peeling, cracking or chipping, and most importantly no fading. The wood of an R107 should be dark and rich, the plastics a deep black – this car is a shining example of what the R107 was when it left the factory.
