This 61 year old 356 is a super choice for the enthusiast who wishes to drive and enjoy classic motoring.
This is a Porsche that gives me confidence to jump in and drive it anywhere. The secret is of course in what’s under the the car, not what you see on top, and this 356 B T5 has had the right people and the right budget spent on the bits you don’t see. The motor has been superbly built, it pulls strongly without a cough, the clutch perfect and the transmission shifts notably smoothly and without whine, the linkage is nice. The handling is good and the dual line disc conversion really reassuring. It has 12 v electrics which again, builds confidence. This is a 356 you could let anyone drive.
I am anticipating the buyer contacting us next year telling us all about their adventure to the mountains and travel back across the Continent, this is the one to do it with. Load your bags, put on the GB sticker and book your crossing.
This 356 presents well, and will be welcomed everywhere. It is an older restoration with original chrome, a comfortable red leather interior, with red square weave carpets and a really nice feel. Note the lovely handles, original instruments and bright work. The eagle eyed will spot that the panel gaps are not as good as they could be and there is a little bubbling in the bottom of the doors, but overall a very attractive and rare right hand drive 356.
Supplied new in South Africa on 3rd February 1960 by Sakar Motors, it spent its first 41 years in South Africa. Imported to the UK in 2001 from Durban to Tilbury Docks onboard the SA Sederberg.
The first UK owner had an extensive restoration carried out during 2005/ 2006. The body was repainted in silver from the original grey. The interior was fully refurbished in red leather to replace the old red vinyl.
In 2011 Maxted Page Prill rebuilt the engine and did some other works to the tune of £22, 000. The third UK keeper took ownership in 2015. He too continued to have the car cared for by Prill and there are invoices for extensive maintenance including a gearbox rebuild, further engine improvement work and the dual line disc brake conversion in all costing over £31, 000. A large folder with detailed lists of all the parts purchased and fitted accompanies the car.
Should you be looking for a right hand 356 that you want to use for trips and adventures, this is, we think, a good bet. Its a great drive, one of the best and I really enjoyed it. There are areas of bodywork which are less than perfect, they could be addressed in your own time and choice, though so far, everyone that has seen it has fallen in love. For driver enjoyment, we would give it a full on 5 stars, overall, taking into account the above, its a solid grade 3 meaning an excellent driving quality Porsche.
