The series 2 “E” types were produced from 1968 until 1971 with various detail and styling changes to satisfy U. S legislation. The beautiful shape of the fixed head coupe cars remained more or less unchanged from the earlier models and although cars for the American market were de-tuned, the UK cars retained their full power with triple “SU” carburettors and a claimed 265bhp.
This car is a 1971 S2 coupe in red with a black interior. It came to us directly from its last long term owner and has had just five previous owners from new. In 2003/ 4 it was treated to a comprehensive bare shell body re-fit and re-paint, carried out to the highest standards - although photos in the history file show a fundamentally strong car in the first place with a minimum of repairs.
Today, this car presents in outstanding order with little sign of deterioration. The paint finish is excellent and the underside of the “tub” is in beautiful order and painted in body colour over a light coating of protective stone-chip. The engine bay also presents exceptionally well and the interior trim, which is all original, is in “just right” condition with light wear.
We have just carried out a minor re-commissioning as the car has been little used for the last 18 months, including plugs, engine oil and filter change, gearbox oil change, rear brake overhaul with new pads, various minor cosmetic jobs and some very enjoyable test miles. It is running and driving beautifully and the engine is sweet and strong with perhaps the best oil pressure we have seen from an XK engine.
We bought this car directly from its last owner who had owned several “E” types and declared this to be the best of them but at 87 he decided that a more sedate classic was appropriate. It’s difficult not to be impressed with it the condition and it is also surprisingly rare as they made just 4800 series 2 coupes, less than any other “E” type version and the majority went for export – this one is an original UK car.
