As per Carlo Abarth’s doctrine of more power to less weight, Fiat SpA released a turbocharged version of its lightweight 2door Uno in 1985. The 0. 7 bar IHI turbine was coupled to an air/ air intercooler and a Bosch LE multipoint injection module to achieve 105 bhp and 147 Nm from the Ritmo-delived 1. 3lt unit. Power was transmitted via a 5 speed gearbox to 13in wide front wheels controlled by lowered MacPherson struts while a beam axle with telescopic dampers and coil springs was selected for the rear. The body’s aerodynamic coefficient was attributed to its lightweight fiberglass hatch spoiler that played well alongside black side skirts, widened arches and foglight equipped front bumper into a testosteronic racer profile. The interior was fitted with sports seats over a red carpet and a set of gauges of oil pressure, oil temperature and turboboost pressure displayed into the switchgear cluster. Four years later the body was further revised to a lower drag coefficient with rounded alloy hatch and smoother foglight & cooling duct bearing front bumper. Aesthetically pleasing, the front grille and mirrors were now color-coded with prior side decor drama now replaced by slimmer and well-defined trim. Its heavier weight was countered by an 0. 8 bar Garret T2 turbine and a Bosch LH Jetronic module feeding a Tipo-derived 1. 4lt unit to an output of 117 bhp and 167 Nm. Front and rear antiroll bars alongside an enhanced lateral seat support offered a firmer cornering experience and minimized the occasional lift off oversteer controlled by the vented 227mm rear discs. The complex switchgear pod gave way to a traditional 3-stalk system mounted proximal to the Momo-designed leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel. In 1992 the Turbo Racing edition was released to encompass and establish all developments that remained till the end of production in 1995. Several options were fitted as standard equipment including remote central locking, electric windows, dual circuit braking and a high power digital radiocassete stereo system.
The Turbo offered was produced in February of 1992 for the EU market in Racing Edition specs under specially ordered Grigio Quarzo Metallizzato over grey interior. After only 2 caring owners, it changed hands to become part of a private Abarth collection. Its already remarkable originality was treated with a series of careful light repairs entailing sourcing and fitting strictly New Old Stock (NOS) parts that included a steering rack, radiator, cooling expansion tank, front and rear bumper trim, speaker-free rear tray, emblems, roofline side trims, shocks and coils and a muffler to match the electrostatically refurbished 13inch wheels to their factory original color. It is now offered fully serviced with original manuals and books.
