EXTERIOR
Finished in Fords famous Diamond White, the paint work is in excellent condition with only a very light dusting of stone chips to note. To improve cooling, increase downforce and enable the use of dramatically wider wheels, Ford equipped the Sierra Cosworth with a body kit that made it one of the most recognisable cars of the 80s. This low mileage example presents in nearly showroom condition, free from any of the usual cracks that can occur over time on the fibre glass body kit.
To add to the dramatic styling Ford opted to install a large rear spoiler supported by the C-pillars and a single central pylon. This spoiler gives this car its signature look and features a trailing edge left in natural black rubber. At the front of the car, a deep wraparound chin spoiler is finished to match.
A unique front bumper incorporates an array of large cooling intakes for the brakes and radiator and to enable hot air to escape from the engine bay, two banks of vents were added to the bonnet. Wheel arch extensions were fitted at either end and joined by deep side skirts and custom rear bumper fitted by ford finishes the already aggressive stance of this car.
INTERIOR
Recaro seats and a small diameter leather-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel compliment the sports exterior. The velour seats are trimmed with Grey and red-patterned centres which also extends to the velour door panels and rear side panels. On a practical front the split rear seats can be lowered to provide an enormous load area. The hard grey plastic dash synonymous with the 80s cars is in great condition and is home to an instrument binnacle comprised of large analogue readouts for road and engine speed together with smaller dials for turbo boost, fuel and water temperature.
With all Sierra Cosworth’s the standard equipment includes a quartz clock, a leather gear knob, a four-speaker radio cassette player with electric antenna, tinted glass, a tilting glass sunroof and electric heated door mirrors are all present and in excellent working order.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
With no modification and in original guise the mechanics on this example are superb, Ford’s single-overhead cam T88 Pinto unit that was first used in the Escort RS2000 formed the basis of this Sierra’s new engine. Cosworth designed an aluminium head to suit the Pinto block with two belt-driven cams operating 16 valves, the Cosworth engineers added a turbocharger and an intercooler that boosted power to 204bhp and referred to as the YB Engine or the Red Top.
Coupled with a five-speed Borg-Warner gearbox the Cosworth YB engine sent its power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Sporting its original unmarked 15? Ford RS Cosworth Lattice alloy wheels the car sits on brand new Bridgestone Potenza’s. Tucked within the wheels sits covered ventilated front discs, four-piston calipers and solid rear discs with single-piston floating calipers.
Present with the alloys are the all-important lock set and key for the four centre locking wheel caps.
HISTORY FILE
Originally registered to the Ford Motor Co. of Brentwood by RS Dealer, Gates Ford of Essex on 14th November 1986. This cherished example has covered just 19k miles since new, corroborated by older MOTs and service stamps in the dealer service record and remains in truly remarkable original condition on inspection..
Cossetted by it’s former keepers over the years. It was the first owner that covered nearly half its current mileage until it was sold and imported into Dublin in 1994. The car was then used sparingly before being put into long term storage at 17, 500 miles where it sat until 2013. It was then removed out of storage and given a light recommission and service before being enjoyed for another 1000 miles in the same hands.
Having owned the car for nearly 22 years its long term custodian decided it was time to pass the baton and it was sold into a private collection in England during 2016. Preserved in its untouched condition ever since it has had very light use only covering just 100 miles since.
General maintenance has been carried out over the years with the original ford service book stamped from 1989 to 1993 and further documentation tracking its care. The latest service and maintenance point at 18, 794 miles on the 29th September 2022.
Presented with the car is the original handbook, original service booklet, MOT certificates, V5 and 2 sets of keys.
