The Sierra Cosworth represents one of the most important performance Fords ever produced. Developed to satisfy Group A homologation regulations, Ford produced 5, 000 examples to allow the model to compete in international motorsport. The result was a car that would become one of the most recognisable performance vehicles of the 1980s. Powered by the legendary Cosworth-developed turbocharged engine and distinguished by its iconic “whale tail” rear spoiler, the Sierra Cosworth achieved success in rallying, touring cars and saloon car championships throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. This particular example is accompanied by every MOT certificate and tax disc dating back to 1989, a fully stamped service history, original documentation and evidence of careful ownership throughout its life. With only two former keepers and retaining all original body panels displaying factory Ford stampings, it represents one of the most original examples available today.
The vehicle presents exceptionally well throughout. A full bare metal respray was completed in 2008, with invoices exceeding £8, 000 retained within the history file. The paintwork remains in outstanding condition having covered only a limited number of miles since completion. Importantly, all original body panels remain fitted and continue to display their original Ford stampings. Panel fit, seams and factory welds remain intact, demonstrating the car has avoided the extensive repairs and modifications commonly seen on lesser examples.
Absolute originality best describes the interior. All original switches, dials and controls remain present and operational. The original RECARO seats remain fitted and retain their factory lumbar support inserts. The only notable imperfections are very slight wear to the driver’s seat bolster and RECARO embroidery. The original rear parcel shelf and rear speakers also remain fitted, a rarity on three-door Sierra Cosworths.
The engine bay remains highly original and exceptionally well presented. The vehicle starts immediately and performs exactly as expected, delivering the full character and performance of its original 204 bhp output. The only notable mechanical upgrade is the period-correct stainless steel exhaust system. The suspension, braking system and underside have recently been recommissioned, with front and rear springs replaced using OEM specification components to ensure correct ride height and factory presentation.
