The new 911 was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997: much was written about it at its launch and it still gets people talking today. The 996 generation broke with tradition and propelled the 911 into the new millennium. In terms of its styling, gone were the rounded curves of the 993 generation, to be replaced by the flatter wings of the early models. The headlamps were shared with the Boxster, which had been introduced previously. The dimensions of the new 911 made it look more imposing, with a longer wheelbase providing greater stability and more room inside. It was bigger than the 993 but weighed 50 kg less, thanks to the use of lighter materials. The engine too was a sea change: it was still a flat-six mounted behind the rear axle, but was now cooled by water rather than air. Porsche managed to retain the characteristic sound of its air-cooled flat-six with its new water-cooled engine. Today, the 996 generation is sought after for its pure design and its similarity to the first series of 911s, with their flatter wings.
This 911 was supplied new to the Porsche Centre at Wuppertal in Germany on 12 March 1998. It is therefore one of the first 996 models built, with the advantage of having a dual-row IMS bearing, which was stronger than that fitted to cars after the 2000 model year. It is fitted with several desirable options such as heated front seats, rear wiper, automatic climate control and the PCM system with navigation, cassette player, 6-disc CD changer and phone. It is discreetly and elegantly presented with black paintwork (Schwarz L741) and a matching interior, which remains in excellent condition. With 128, 700 km on the odometer, it has recently been serviced, with the work in July 2023 including the replacement of the front brake discs and pads, new front shock absorbers and four new tyres, for a total of nearly 4000 ?. Its service book, in addition to the bills, shows the steady increase in its mileage and the regular maintenance carried out. The car is currently fitted with the front bumper and side skirts from the Aerokit, giving it a more assertive yet still restrained appearance.
A genuine revolution in every way, the 996 stands apart in the history of the 911 and succeeded in revitalizing this exceptional series of cars. Nowadays, it is appreciated for its technical attributes and its special place in this line. It is a wise choice for any Porsche or sports car enthusiast who is looking for a fast and reliable classic with performance that remains relevant today. This handsome example has an understated look and will offer its new owner the delights of a naturally-aspirated Porsche flat-six, mated to a manual gearbox.
