Dating from 1992, the Coupe version of Rover's 200 became something of a sleeper for Rover, with sales racking up against distinguished rivals such as the Honda CRX, Ford Probe, and Vauxhall Calibra, all of which are gathering strong followings now as modern classics. The 216 Coupe was offered with ‘progressive rate positive centre feel’ power steering, 15″ ‘SEi’ alloy wheels, central locking, electric door mirrors and windows, remote fuel flap and boot release, reclining sports style front seats with adjustable lumbar support, burr walnut dashboard fascia, two-piece detachable ‘T bar’ glass roof, body colour grille, and chrome tailpipe finisher.
Manufactured in 1993, the 216 ‘Tomcat’ Coupe offered was first registered in the United Kingdom on the 12th of August that year. Fitted with the 1590cc straight-four 16-valve SOHC engine with multipoint fuel injection, it is allied to the five-speed manual transmission. Finished in the striking paint finish of Nightfire Red with Grey cloth interior upholstery, the Rover has been in current registered ownership since 1999 with only two former keepers and has just c. 42, 000 miles shown on the odometer which is believed genuine. Recently recommissioned from a period of long-term storage, ‘L7 EPW’ has received a new alternator, battery, and servicing.
