“Our" TR4 has benefited from a comprehensive restoration recently completed by the current Sydney owner, a Life Member of the TR Register with decades of experience in both owning and rebuilding TRs. Purchased from a deceased estate, where it had been sitting in a garage for nine years, in Victoria in 2020, the TR4 was transported to Sydney and disassembled for a full body-off restoration.
Once stripped, the body tub was blasted back to bare metal and found to have virtually no rust; the tub and hung panels were then sent to Victoria for repairs (new sills and a new front valance) and painting in a modern Pepper White colour to closely replicate the original Old English Cream. Meanwhile the chassis was aligned, stripped and painted in PPC Chassis 3 coat paint, the suspension bushes replaced with modern neoprene bushes and new brass trunnions fitted to the front suspension. The chassis, door sills and all enclosed body areas were all treated with fish oil prior to final assembly.
The dash was treated to a new woodgrain veneer coated with clear, the gauges dismantled and cleaned with new globes and seals and the amp meter replaced with a voltmeter. An interior kit supplied by John Skinner in the UK saw the interior panels, seats and kick plates all replaced, along with new rubbers to the doors, sills and windscreen surrounds. A new windscreen was installed and the door window mechanisms overhauled and the side glass cleaned.
Mechanically the engine was totally dismantled and the block first tanked, the oil galleries cleaned and inspected before the rebuild commenced using new barrels and pistons, a new crank, new oil pump, pickup and filter. The engine was fully balanced with the flywheel, pressure plate and harmonic balancer mounted. New big and little end bearings, new valves and valve springs and collets were fitted and the cam followers machined. The cylinder head
was reconditioned with new valve seats to allow the use of unleaded fuel while the twin Stromberg carburettors were stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with new kits.
The four-speed gearbox (with electric overdrive on 3rd and 4th gears) was sent to Bob Anderson in South Australia, a retired TR specialists, and overhauled with new bearings, synchros, seals, solenoids and selectors.
The brakes were completely overhauled with a new clutch, brake master cylinder and rear wheel cylinders (with stainless steel linings), plus new lines and brake pads.
Other notable features of the rebuild included:
· Narrow fan belt conversion
· High-capacity water pump
· Bosch 65w alternator
· Radiator overhauled
· Temperature-controlled electric fan
· Electric fuel pump
· Reconditioned distributor
· New spark plugs, leads and coils
· Hi-torque starter
· A modern heater and 2-speed fan
· Hood bows dismantled and rebuilt (an original hood was sourced)
· New 70-spoke chrome wire wheels (plus new hubs/ spinners)
The Triumph was fully re-wired using a special 18 circuit loom that allows circuit to be fully fused, along with relays for headlights, the electric fan, overdrive etc.
Restored using as many original parts as possible to maintain the Triumph’s authenticity, our vendor has reluctantly decided to part with the car due to a change in circumstances. Accompanying the TR4, which will be sold unregistered, is a folder documenting the restoration, a USB stick containing a photo file of the build and both original and aftermarket workshop manuals. Aside from some running in (and our vendor has provided instructions on changing the oil and re-torquing the cylinder head), the TR4 is essentially ready for the new owner to simply jump in and enjoy on the open road.
Estimate: $45, 000 - $55, 000 (AUD)
