The Morris Minor was launched at Earl’s Court on 27th October 1948, the first cars, series “MM” remaining in production until 1953.
This car is one of the earliest cars in existence, leaving the factory in February 1949. It was exported to New Zealand from new and returned to the UK in 2005 as a solid project. The new owner commissioned a comprehensive cosmetic restoration with a long list of mods to make the car capable of keeping up with modern traffic. The restoration included a high quality re-paint, re-trim with leather seats and a long list of mechanical, suspension and braking upgrades including 1098cc power with matching ribbed case gearbox (but retaining the original gear-stick) disc-brakes and alternator. Around £11k was spent at that time – probably £20k today - and the result is a car that retains the looks of an early Minor but with much more modern road manners. We bought this car from its first owner in the UK in 2016 and sold it to its second owner here, who enjoyed the car for several years until selling it back to us, recently. He has accumulated various bills for routine maintenance and one or two for further improvements including a “Newton Commercial” period style carpet set.
We have just carried out some cosmetic work, changed the engine oil, filter and gearbox oil and a several test miles. It runs and drives beautifully with strong oil pressure. It is worth mentioning that it is 75 years old (!) but more suited to modern driving than an original “Lowlight”.
The underside is in excellent condition as is the upper body. The paint finish remains in beautiful order with a few imperfections as you would expect after 19 years.
This Minor is unique and offers great value - it’s also unlikely that you will meet an older MM on the show circuit as the number of older Minors in existence, worldwide is almost certainly in single figures.
