Description
The second generation of the legendary Mercedes ‘S-Class’ - The W126 took the successful formula of the W116, and worked to further build on it by improving the ride, handling and efficiency. Launched in 1979 at the IAA Frankfurt show, the new W126 was more aerodynamic (Leading to better efficiency, improved performance and less wind noise) and around 10% lighter than the original S-Class. This particular 1988 S-Class is a Series II W126, which came with further improvements - Visual changes, larger V8 engines and the ‘Gullydeckelfelge’ (German for manhole-cover wheel rim) alloy wheels. This car offers an extremely cost-effective entry into what is a very solid, reliable, charming and appreciating V8 classic that is happy being used every day or kept for those sunny weekends.
Exterior
Unique ‘White Ivory’ exterior colour (Very period correct off-white) presents exceptionally well with no particular damage to note. There are no signs of corrosion or bubbling on the exterior, with only minor flakes to some of the brightwork which itself is all present and correct. Being very critical on closer inspection the sides have likely been painted at some stage in it’s life, as there is a slight colour difference between these and some of the horizontal surfaces (Bonnet, tailgate and roof) - But this is very critical and expected of a vehicle this age. Headlight wipers have been removed, but can be refitted by the new owner if desired.
Interior
Ivory follows into the interior, which has weathered the years exceptionally well - There are no tears or excessive damage to the leather, and all trim is present and correct. The original steering wheel has been replaced by a wooden ‘Sport Line’ alternative, which does compliment the car and interior well. Electric windows, sunroof and mirror adjustments all work as expected, and the power seat control (a first for Mercedes-Benz in the W126) also works as expected.
Mechanical
The V8 fires up and idles well - Shift into ‘D’ and the car picks up pace quickly, as expected with the amount of torque delivered by the M116 4. 2L V8 Engine - It’s effortless to drive and keeps up with traffic well. On collection, I drove this car 70 miles through various road types (Motorway / Country lane etc) and it took it all in it’s stride. Of course, with this age and mileage it does feel ‘loose’ at points, but this may also be due to the ‘luxury’ nature of the vehicle. The most recent MOT completed in May showed no advisories.
