THE PORSCHE 911 'TYPE 930' TURBO
Much of the Porsche 911 road car's development benefited directly from the factory's racing program, and it was Group 4 homologation rules of the early 70s, which required 400 road cars to be built, that spurred 'Project 930' - the legendary 911 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger (Kühnle, Kopp, and Kausch) to the 3. 0-liter Carrera RSR engine, creating a fire-breathing beast that, in road trim, delivered 260bhp and a top speed of 155mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was the best appointed 911 and amazingly flexible hence only four speeds in the gearbox capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds.
Setting the 911 Turbo apart from its peers was the relaxed way this astounding performance was delivered. Comparing the Turbo to similarly quick 'he-man' cars such as the Holman & Moody-tuned Cobra 427 and the Ford GT40, Motor's Roger Bell reckoned what made the Porsche so different was that it "hurls you forward with similar velocity but in an uncannily quiet and effortless way. To be shoved so hard in the back that you need high-back seats to keep your head on, yet neither to feel nor hear anything more than a muffled hum, is a very odd sensation indeed in a car."
The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel-arches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler first appeared on the Carrera but were pumped up for the tough-looking Turbo, while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. For 1978 the engine grew to 3. 3 liters, gaining an intercooler, and now 300 bhp. The top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. Sadly, US Porsche customers were only able to enjoy the newly enlarged Turbo for a couple of years before emissions legislation forced its withdrawal from the North American market. More refined than hitherto yet retaining its high performance edge, the Porsche 911 Turbo sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age.
THE CAR OFFERED
As one of the most raw and unbridled road cars of its day, the 930 Turbo has rightfully earned its place as a legend, yet it is quite rare to find an example as original and unfettered as the one offered here. This exquisite, low-mileage car was completed at Porsche's Zuffenhausen plant in May of 1978; during the first production year for the 3. 3-liter 930. According to the Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity, this Turbo appears today essentially as it left the works; built to US-specifications and equipped with electric sunroof, two side mirrors, and finished in classic Grand Prix White over dark brown leather upholstery.
According to the maintenance book, this car was delivered through the legendary Jacksonville, Florida based Porsche dealer, Brumos Porsche, on July 29, 1978. The car appears to have crossed the US shortly after delivery, as records show it was serviced at the Beverly Hills, California Porsche agency in March of 1979, and again at Chuck Iverson Porsche in Newport Beach, California in June of 1979. The car is believed to have remained in California for several decades; it is known to have been owned by a Lompoc, California resident in the 1980s, and was purchased in Southern California by a Texas based enthusiast, prior to being acquired by the vendor.
Today, this highly original 930 presents extremely well throughout, with the odometer showing just 5, 824 miles at the time of cataloguing a remarkably low number, as these robust cars can cover big miles with ease. The interior appears to be original, as do most other finishes throughout the car. Many of the original factory marks and decals are still in place, and what could very well be the original Blaupunkt AM/ FM cassette-radio is fitted in the dash. The 930 is offered complete with the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, original air compressor kit and space-saver spare, owner's and maintenance books, and retains its matching numbers engine.
