The fourth generation of the Mercedes SL (Sport-Leicht), also known as the R129, was launched in 1989. Designed by the acclaimed Bruno Sacco, it features a restrained but elegant design, with a long front grille featuring a huge star in the centre and a classic bodywork free of frivolous details.
Its technology, on the other hand, is anything but classic. Many of its technological achievements were taken directly from the contemporary S-Class and, even in 1989, the R129 offered comfort and safety technology that has only recently become popular.
The highlights include the adaptive suspension, traction control, electric soft top and, most importantly, the electric safety frame roll hoop, which in the event of a sharp incline, would rise in less than 1 second to protect the occupants in the event of a rollover.
The 300 SL-24 is powered by the iconic 3-litre, 24-valve M104 engine, which uses its 231 PS and 272 Nm to reach 100 km/ h in 8 seconds. Such agility would not be possible without the Getrag “dog leg” manual gearbox and limited-slip differential, which make this SL a refined sports car.
This car now has 90, 000 km. It was purchased from the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Vigo, Spain in September 1992 and is configured in a classic combination of Signal Red (Signalrot 568) with black leather interior. It is delivered with a hard-top, duplicate key, manuals and service books and is equipped with a Becker Cascade radio with Bluetooth and navigation.
