Description
The Austin-Healey 100/ 6, launched in 1956 and produced until 1959, represented an important step in the evolution of the Austin-Healey range. It succeeded the Austin-Healey 100, the original model born of a partnership between the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and Donald Healey, a renowned British engineer and racing driver. The 1957 model 100/ 6 represented a modernisation of the original formula, both mechanically and stylistically. Unlike the 100, which had a four-cylinder engine, the 100/ 6 adopted a 2. 6-litre in-line six-cylinder engine derived from the Austin Westminster, producing around 102 bhp in its initial version, increased to 117 bhp in 1957 with the introduction of the revised 'BN4' version. In terms of design, the 100/ 6 retained the elegant, low-slung lines of its predecessor, but introduced a number of changes, including a slightly modified radiator grille, a bonnet with a raised air intake, and a longer wheelbase that allowed the addition of two small rear seats, making the model a 2+2. Two main variants were offered: the BN4 with four seats and a four-speed gearbox with overdrive, followed by the two-seater BN6, introduced in 1958. 1957 saw the Austin-Healey 100/ 6 improve its performance, thanks in particular to a new cylinder head and improved fuel supply, boosting its appeal to sporty driving enthusiasts. Although heavier than the original 100, it remained a lively, fun-to-drive car, true to the "British roadster" spirit. The 100/ 6 also marked a transition period before the arrival of the Austin-Healey 3000 in 1959, its successor with an even more powerful engine. It therefore occupies a special place in the brand's history, combining the classic charm of the 100 with the performance promise of the 3000. Today, the 1957 model is sought after by collectors for its pure styling, its emblematic engine and its pivotal role in the Big Healeys lineage. This example was delivered new in England in 1957. It is an improved BN4 right-hand drive version. It is fitted with a hardtop. It is in very good condition and is well documented.
