Description
Our Bristol 412 is for sale. Every one will say they are sad to let their car go, but we are truly saddened, it was bought as a forever car. Unfortunately life and health have a habit of forcing the changing of well laid out plans.
It is a project, however it is about as easy a project as one could buy. It is complete, all, and we assure you all of the hard work is done and it runs nicely.
This is the Series 1 car, with the 6556 cc Chrysler V8 fitted, coupled to a Chrysler Torqueflight 3 speed automatic transmission. The centre transmission mount has been replaced with the original equipment part. I have no proof of the following statement, but I was told that when I bought the car that the engine had been recently overhauled. I can only say truthfully that the engine runs smoothly, it shows good and correct oil pressure and there is no evidence of any overheating.
The brake hoses have all been replaced, though the brakes will need bleeding. Pads and discs are good. Tyres are new. Prop-shaft, back axle and steering are all in good order. Avon safety wheels are fitted, though they need the centre caps which are readily available.
Anyone who has knowledge of these cars will know that the steel rollover structure often corrodes, this car was no exception. All of the affected metal was cut out and replaced. Carefully retaining the geometry of the structure new fabricated metal was welded in and Bilt Hamber anti-corrosion products were used to protect the job. It was done thoroughly and with integrity. The ‘A’ posts on this car are solid. The chassis required some, but not a lot of welding, much less than other V8’s I’ve seen. Underneath is sound, no rot to the floors in the cabin, boot or wheel arches.
Body work is straight, needs paint.
Interior is complete apart from the carpets, however a firm called Coverdale near Wigan have patterns to suit, they have the correct quality carpet and they’re not expensive. The rear wheel arches trim needs replacing, but that’s an easy job, where most choose to bespoke replace it. Leather seats are lovely. I’ve only shown the rear seats positioned as the front seats are stored at the back of my store room, however I promise they are in excellent shape. Wood components of the dashboard are beautiful. Professional quality restoration. Instruments present, just need refitting with the wood, but I’d respray the car first. Door cards good.
Really, in summary to complete it is repaint and reassemble. It’s is a ‘nuts and bolts’ car, nothing daunting. So worthwhile, and with an opportunity to add value if that’s all you want to do. Originally Bristol Red from the factory, a long time ago it was painted orange. We were going to keep it that colour, so seventies retro cool. It’s a marmite car, you either get it or you don’t, but my wife and I certainly get it, it goes like the wind, it’s distinctive, you’ll probably never see another one, and we are just so very sad to sell.
Available to view in Chester. For the avoidance of doubt the photographs were taken in the last two weeks.
