1957 MGA Roadster - 5 speed gearbox & MGB engine
The MGA made its debut in 1955 and was a marked departure from the previous ‘TF’ Series. With curvaceous up to the minute styling, the new MGA had taken MG years ahead overnight. As with previous models it was to prove a huge export success, with the bulk of production going to North America. The MGA also was well received in South Africa and the Antipodes.
The example we present here was imported from Arizona and was first registered in the UK in 2013. It has undergone a most comprehensive restoration with considerable attention to detail. Fitted with an MGB engine and five speed gearbox, this car performs very briskly and is a joy to drive, being taut and precise on the road. During the restoration the car was converted to RHD.
The Heritage Certificate shows the date of build to have been 31st October/ 1st November 1957 in left hand drive form and factory fitted equipment comprised wire wheels, heater and adjustable steering column.
The previous owner of this car was a very keen MG enthusiast who has also served on the committee of the MG Car Club MGA Register.
Correctly cared for, this MGA drives extremely well, with lively performance from the MGB engine and more relaxed cruising ability thanks to the 5-speed gearbox conversion.
A substantial file of documentation includes details of the restoration and numerous hand-written notes. Looking most appealing in Orient Red with black leather trimmed cockpit, the car has a stainless-steel luggage rack, double duck hood and a tonneau cover. A brake servo is also fitted.
