Description
The "100" takes its name, originally, from Donald Healey's aim to reach 100 mph (160 km/ h) with his new creation. It became retrospectively 100/ 4 to differentiate it from the 100/ 6 that followed. Born of Donald Healey's talent, the Austin-Healey 100 was equipped with Austin mechanical components, including the robust 2. 6-litre inline-four of the A90 Atlantic. The particularly appealing design, a sort of archetype of the British roadster, was due to Gerry Coker and would form the basis for the entire line of the "big Healeys" which would end their careers with a 3-litre engine. Today, the 100 is regarded as the sportiest in the series: its more rugged presentation, its four drum brakes and its not-so-sophisticated mechanics but endowed with strong low-end torque make it a no-nonsense machine.
