Description
The 1955 Austin-Healey 100/ 4 BN1 is an iconic model in the history of British sports cars. Its name comes from its ability to surpass 100 mph (roughly 160 km/ h), a performance rare for the era. Produced from 1953 to 1955, it was the first of the legendary “Big Healeys” and the starting point of the partnership between Donald Healey and the Austin Motor Company.
Powered by a 2, 660 cc inline-four mated to a three-speed gearbox with overdrive, the BN1 offered both speed and refinement, all in a low, elegant roadster silhouette, with a long bonnet and a minimalist cockpit.
With only 10, 000 units produced, the surviving BN1s are today highly sought after by collectors for their rarity, exceptional performance and historical significance. They represent the birth of an icon that shaped the automotive landscape of the 1950s.
This superb first-generation example, rare, was delivered new and registered in the Netherlands in July 1955.
The original colour was indeed black with a red interior, as attested by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. The car stayed in the Netherlands until 2008 and still retained its original registration plate! It was then imported to Belgium by its last owner.
It has undergone two restorations: a complete chassis restoration by a Dutch specialist workshop between 1993 and 1994, followed by a full overhaul in 2009.
The absence of bumpers, the grille-style bonnet and the additional headlights give it a sporty look in keeping with the era's fashion.
The handling is noticeably improved by the installation of telescopic front dampers.
The engine has been rebuilt from the ground up and is fitted with an aluminium cylinder head and an additional electric cooling fan for optimal cooling.
The car drives beautifully, the chassis is perfectly rigid and this Healey has benefited from meticulous maintenance in recent years.
It is equipped with a soft-top, side windows and a tonneau cover. A file of invoices also accompanies the vehicle, including FIA and FIVA certifications. This magnificent car has recently been imported from Belgium and is ready to be registered to take the wheel of a new owner.
