We are delighted to present for sale this 1973 Series 3 Land Rover, finished in the popular Keswick Green colour scheme with Limestone Wheels and Sand Canvas. This particular example benefits from a set of Michelin 4×4 cross climate tyres, which are both slightly larger than standard for improved road performance and to give a positive aesthetic look and stance.
Externally, as the photos show, there are plenty of period features one would hope to see on a “good” Series 3 – the bonnet mounted spare, vintage number plates, rear grab handles, yellow OEM “Land Rover” rear mud flaps (now discontinued and retail for north of £500 online!), silver lamp surrounds, recent canvas – etc etc – and some modern features are fitted to make life easier… a tow bar with electrics to allow towing, and a set of Defender mirrors for improved visibility for the driver. In our opinion at HQ, these upgrades and period charm come together to create a very attractive package, which was well received by the public whilst out on our test drive route and looks just right parked up in the market square.
On the inside, the interior is largely standard with three front deluxe seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. The only real addition worth discussing is the fitment of a seat belt bar with integrated roll over hoop – this also affords the driver and passenger a full 3 point over the shoulder inertia belt – just like a modern car – which makes hopping in and going for a drive easy, as opposed to needing to adjust a static belt. The middle seat has a lap belt fitted, so all three front seats are belted. The roll over hoop affords additional protection should an accident occur. The rear is unfitted, but for £595 could be fitted with a pair of rear bench seats to give seating for seven occupants including the driver… it currently houses a rear load mat to protect the floor against scratches & the tailgate chains have deluxe covers to stop them rattling during transit, which is very welcome.
Out on the road, this Series 3 delivers a pleasing period drive, with some notable additions – a weber carburettor for superior power over standard, with the larger and more road biased Michelin tyres giving increased gearing for a more relaxed cruise and a superior road holding experience with an improved ride. It is good fun to drive – especially with the sides of the canvas rolled up, the windows open and your shades on.
In summary then, if you are looking for an MOT and Tax exempt Series 3 Land Rover which you can use for the remainder of the winter or you are “getting ahead” and setting up for the spring and those warm summer days, then this is well worth considering. With the attractive colour scheme, tasteful upgrades and period features, it should prove to be a trusted family companion and a great talking point down the local pub!
