Description

Presented in 1969 and marketed from 1970, the Porsche 914 is the fruit of a collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen. At the time, Volkswagen was seeking a replacement for the Karmann-Ghia while Porsche wanted to offer an entry-level model under the 911. The joint project gave rise to a car very different from Porsche's traditional production: a lightweight mid‑engined sports car, an architecture previously reserved for racing cars. This configuration allows an excellent mass distribution and gives the 914 a particularly balanced on‑road handling.

The most sought-after version is the 914 2. 0, introduced in 1973. Unlike the 1. 7 and 1. 8‑litre versions derived directly from Volkswagen’s engine bank, the 2. 0 engine benefits from a Porsche‑developed preparation. It is an air‑cooled flat‑four of 1, 971 cm³, equipped with Bosch D‑Jetronic electronic fuel injection, developing 100 hp at 5, 000 rpm and around 160 Nm of torque. This engine, recognisable by its inclined spark plug cylinder heads and larger valves, offers noticeably higher performance. Paired with a 5‑speed manual gearbox type 901, the 914 2. 0 can reach around 190 km/ h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/ h in just over 9 seconds, very respectable figures for a car weighing under a tonne.

The design of the 914 prioritises lightness and efficiency. Its monocoque chassis, low driving position and removable Targa roof make it as enjoyable on the road as on winding parcours. The suspension relies on front torsion bars and rear coil springs, with four disc brakes, guaranteeing very solid handling and precise driving. Thanks to its mid‑engine and short wheelbase, the 914 stands out for its remarkable agility, often praised by the specialist press of the era.

The example shown is a Porsche 914 2. 0 first registered in May 1973 and delivered new in Belgium, making it a European‑spec car. It has had only three owners since new. Its second owner, who was the head of Porsche Belgium, undertook a complete frame‑off restoration, stripping the car to a bare shell to rebuild it to the highest standards. The bodywork was restored in its original colour, while the interior was completely rebuilt. Mechanically, the cylinder heads have been overhauled, the drive shafts replaced recently, and the car is fitted with a limited‑slip differential, further enhancing grip and driving pleasure. Very well maintained, the car today presents in a very handsome condition, ready to hit the road while offering the light, sporty character that made the 914 2. 0 famous.
