The 1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1500 is widely regarded as one of the most desirable Type 14 Ghias because it combines the elegant early body styling with significant mechanical improvements. It was the first year the model received the 1493 cc engine and front disc brakes.
TGU 265E was manufactured in 1967, a rare original RHD Karman Ghia Coupe, originally exported to south Africa. Thirty-Three years later, the VW came to the UK, arriving to London in exceptional body condition as many South African imports do. Its condition is documented by an impressive condition report and specialist valuation at the time. It spent its first ten years in the south of England. For the next fifteen years, the car has been with a local owner in North Yorkshire and he brought it to us ten years ago when our bodyshop, Malton Coachworks Ltd carried out a full ‘glass-out repaint and other improvements costing £7, 000. The beautiful Ruby colour still has a great glossy shine. At that time the underside was descaled and undersealed. The finish of the exterior is commensurate with a respray done much more recently and the chromework is excellent. Accompanying the receipt for the bodywork, there is an abundance of invoices for parts along with MOT tests, evidencing meticulous maintenance.
Powering the VW from the rear is the legendary 1500cc air-cooled flat-four engine which creates a lovely exhaust note. Super handling is achieved through the weight distribution of the car. The car runs superbly, the engine pulling strongly through the rev range. The 4-speed manual transmission is smooth and quiet. The driving experience is of a tight and well-sorted example. With the underpinnings of the trusted Beetle combined with the Italian design flair of Carrozzeria Ghia, the resulting Karman Ghia Coupe is a blend of reliability and timeless style.
