Literally just arrived this week, and surely one for the serious BMW Airhead man.
At first glance, this is your average, quite tidy, BMW R series twin, but closer inspection reveals that it's a genuine, very early R100S.
The matching engine and chassis numbers indicate that it's an April 1977 manufactured bike, with it's first registration in this country being in 1981.
We know little about the bikes provenance, as there is little in the way of history, despite the last elderly owner having had the bike for many years.
We do now know that the bike was subject to an insurance claim some 10 years ago, (possibly explains the pattern fairing), so this is reflected in the VERY competitive price.
The bike had not been used in anger since 2011, and in fact has only covered around 800 miles in the last 6 years. Fresh fuel, new plugs, points, carb service, etc, saw the bike fire instantly, and soon settle to a steady idle. She's charging well, with good oil pressure, and good, even compressions on both cylinders. A short run showed a smooth (for a boxer !) gearbox, and it passed an MOT today with no advisories.
Apart from the usual wear and tear to the cosmetics of a 40 year old bike, the only real negatives are the lack of a genuine S fairing (the one fitted is pattern, but does have working clock and volt meter), and lack of standard headlight ears.
On a positive note, she has a strong engine, full stainless exhaust system (including headers), stainless spokes and original alloy rims, good Metzelers, correct twin disc front end, RS handlebars, and pannier frames.
All in all, a good, honest, mechanically sound Boxer, that could be used as is, and sympathetically improved over time, or returned to it's former glory as an increasingly rare Airhead. I guess this one will appeal to the guys looking to build a special, especially at this price, but it surely, as an early 100S, it deserves to have its pedigree retained.
Please ring in the first instance to register your interest, or if you'd like to chat about the bike, or any of our other BMW Airheads.
PS, Apologies for the quality of the pics. I'll be uploading better ones in the next couple of days.
