The Appeal

Lotus’ '70s and '80s model naming got somewhat confusing. This car is the short-lived ‘Eclat Excel’ produced between 1982 and 1984. It was an extensively upgraded Eclat featuring a revised, galvanised chassis and dependable Toyota running gear, including gearbox, driveline and brakes. These cars retained the ‘narrow body’ styling of the original Eclat, but with revised body colour bumpers that would later be carried over to the wider Excel.

The Eclat Excel was the last car developed under Colin Chapman’s tutelage - he died shortly after it was launched - and this example is one of just four pre-production prototypes. It was used for evaluation, press duties and development and carries the notable chassis suffix ‘1148.’ Any Eclat Excel is extremely rare, but this car is especially so.

It is in extremely good condition, its red paintwork said to be free of the usual fibreglass crazing, and its chassis is also reportedly in good order. The beige velour interior is a feast for the eyes, a highly preserved and barely worn cabin with an array of original features. The Type 912 2.2-litre Lotus engine was rebuilt 10,000 miles ago, including cylinder liners. We’re told the car features useful upgrades like power steering, adjustable shock absorbers, and polybushing that improve usability and the driving experience.

With its Toyota running gear and galvanised chassis, the Eclat Excel rectified many of the issues with the earlier cars. This car has the condition and provenance to appeal to collectors.
