1971 AUSTIN MINI COOPER S MKIII - FAST ROAD TRACK PREPARED.
This Austin Mini Cooper S MkIII is a track-prepared but road-legal example of the endearing classic British city car, which has been enhanced with a raft of performance upgrades.
Under the bonnet sits a competition-spec 1380cc naturally aspirated inline-four, now producing 104bhp and driving the front wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
This example was first registered in June 1971, and has been with me for two years.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
This Mini Cooper S is now finished in a handsome shade of blue with a gloss-black roof, over a largely stripped-out cabin, featuring black leather-trimmed diamond-quilted front seats with cord cloth inserts.
It sits on Gaz adjustable shocks, and 10-inch Mini Sport Cooper S Steel wheels finished in cream, which are shod in Yokohama Advan HF tyres.
Externally, the car now features twin front spotlights, quick-release bonnet pins, bullet-style door mirrors, a rear spotlight, and an additional offside A-pillar mounted side-view mirror.
Inside, the cabin features an Alcantara-trimmed Sparco dished steering wheel, TRS four-point racing harnesses, a KAD aluminium gearshift, a kill switch, an aftermarket TIM rev-counter, rally works dashboard with toggle switches, a Safety Devices roll cage, a rear seat delete, an aluminium OBP passenger footrest, and an International Brantz 2 tripmeter.
The powertrain upgrades include a competition-spec 1380cc engine with a Spamspeed-stamped engine block, lightened duplex timing gear and chain, lightened flywheel, single 45 webber carburettor, full race exhaust system, full MED race breather rocker cover and oil catch kit, KAD straight cut gearbox with drop gears, alloy race radiator, boot-mounted fuel filter, braided fuel lines, NGK spark plugs, and high-temperature double silicone ignition leads.
CONDITION
The car was restored around 20 years ago which included a re-shell, before being placed into long term storage, with very minimal use since.
The most recent MOT test was on 24 February 2023 at 96, 238 miles, and was a first-time pass.
SERVICE HISTORY
Notable maintenance includes an engine-out full gasket set change in August 2022. The car comes with V5C, a collection of MOT certificates, two sets of keys, a dyno print-out, and a large collection of maintenance and parts invoices.
