Description
I discovered this lovely and super rare 416gti auto close to home 18 months ago.
In my ownership it has been recommissioned and is now in regular use, though there is room for further improvement - mainly to the paintwork.
Good bits: 74k miles, low ownership, British Racing Green with full grey leather in great condition (not sun damaged at all). The optional factory fitted air con is ice cold and it has the R681 stereo - must be unique in this spec!
It has had a full service with new drive belt, auxiliary belt, water pump, fuel pump and all fluids last year, together with a new battery. I have refurbished the lattice alloys and had 4 new quality tyres fitted. The headlining was replaced this year along with a carpet clean. The car has just had an MOT.
Not so good bits: There is no rot that I can see and only a couple of scabs on the back edges of the front wings that have been treated with POR15 and touched in with the correct body colour. There is a small patch at the back of one of the cills (underneath) though you have to look hard to see it. Rear arches otherwise rot free. The underside components have surface rust and would benefit from rubbing down and a coat of Lanoguard / Waxoil or similar.
The body looks ok from a distance, though up closer you can see quite a few dings and evidence of poor historic paint repair / blistering on a couple of the front panels. The bonnet is the worst. The boot lid also has a poor paint repair. I was planning on finishing the car with a top half respray (except for the roof which is fine) though I can't seem to get this done locally at a reasonable price and my circumstances have changed.
I also bought a rare, early 620gsi earlier in the year and don't really have the space to store either, so at the moment both are now stood outside which is not ideal. One if them has to go and it is a difficult choice, so this is up for sale unless the 620 sells first.
Once painted it will be one of the best left so for anyone good at bodywork or with access to a reasonable bodyshop, it would make a great and valuable project as this would be a £4k plus car once completed.
The price is not-negotiable. Located Godalming and happy for people to inspect or ask questions
Having recently 'sold' to an enthusiast (who paid a deposit and was arranging transport) he then backed out and I have now reduced the price significantly, so definitely no offers now!The car had stood under cover for some time after its original owners (husband and wife) died. When dealing with their estate, their grandson thankfully knew the car was something special and wanted it to go to an enthusiast.
