Ultra rare Honda Prelude 2. 0i EX 4 Wheel Steer, with a genuine 29, 500 miles, in Californian Silver metallic – a very light champagne gold colour. Top Ltd luxury spec with full dark grey leather interior, fully loaded with electric windows, electric sunroof, electric mirrors, automatic transmission, stereo/ radio cassette with electric aerial, central locking, etc., all working perfectly.
This car is close to perfect, and absolutely remarkable for its age. I bought it from the original owner ten years ago, who was too old to drive anymore. He bought it new on his 65th birthday, as a present to himself, and garaged stored it and did 15, 000 miles in around 25 years. I have then dry stored it and used it on-and-off for the past decade or so, adding another 14, 000 miles. It is genuine, unmolested and aside from the slight patina of age, is almost as new.
It's an amazing car to drive – the mechanical 4 wheel steering works perfectly and gives a sensation that's unique. It has ultra fast turn-in, corners flat, and is surprisingly stable and composed at high speeds. All this, plus a turning circle that you'd expect from a London taxi. The 150BHP 4-cylinder twin cam engine is as fresh as you'd expect, as is the 4 speed plus overdrive Honda auto transmission with switchable sports mode.
Those unfamiliar with the car might be surprised to learn that the 3rd gen Prelude was the fastest car going through Road and Track magazine's slalom test in the year of its launch - beating the Ferrari F40! It corners like it's on rails, despite the fat tyres and dinky 14" wheels. This car has been fully serviced from new. It's got whatever it has needed, which – given the reliability of Hondas of this era – is not much!
Since I acquired it, it's had oil & filter changes every 6, 000 miles, an automatic transmission fluid change, a cambelt and water pump, the valve clearances reset, new front brake discs and pads, new air and fuel filters, new rear KYB gas shock absorbers and top mounts. Also, new 150% brighter Osram headlamp bulbs have been fitted, and recently a new Honda battery. PAS fluid, ABS fluid and brake fluid just flushed. Recent NGK Iridium spark plugs.
It's also had a new centre exhaust section and four new Continental PremiumContact tyres, plus the alloy wheels have been refurbished. I also fitted a new old stock early 1990s (hence period-correct) Pioneer stereo radio/ cassette. I have the original Honda unit too, which no longer works.
Cosmetically the car is superb – almost like new inside and out, except the driver's seat leather has a section that needs repair (see photos), and there's a very minor surface scratch on the front wing. There's some paint coming off the rocker cover too. Mechanically it's perfect, apart from the aircon likely needing a regas. Will be sold with 12 months MOT.
This is quite possibly the lowest mileage 3rd generation Honda Prelude in the UK and one of the lowest in the world, I would think. It's generally in superb mechanical and cosmetic condition and is fantastic and unique to drive. In 2019 it won the 1980s category in a recent Concours event, and has hardly done any miles since.
