I'll try and keep the story telling short..... This car was part of a collection by a chap who lives overseas. I had seen the car at my local garage and admired it for a while and wondered why it was always there. I spoke to the garage owner who said that it may very well be for sale (if the right offer was made!) I know the garage owner really well so spoke to the car owner who allowed me to fully inspect the car using the ramps so I could see the condition on the underside.
Thankfully, and the reason I was confident with the purchase, was that the car's underside is very clean and free from rot. There are a few cosmetic blemishes around the bodywork and the bumpers (although back to blacked) could do with another going over. It's worth reminding anyone interested that the car is 32 years old so is definitely not in A1 condition, however, it starts, drives, runs and stops beautifully, with no knocks or bangs. It pulls strongly in all gears and has a lovely little exhaust rasp. Gear change is crisp too.
Before I took over ownership in October last year, the car had spent 7 years literally moving from storage to the garage for it's annual MOT, then put back into storage. When I bought it I had it MOT'd which is due 21/ 10/ 23. I will happily MOT the car before sale.
Since ownership I have put these new parts on the car:
HT leads
Distributor cap and rotor arm
Spark plugs
Exhaust hangers
Track rod ends
The oil is golden and the air filter is super clean so I have not serviced the car. From the service record (again at the same garage) the car was serviced just before it was put to storage. It has a new set of Toyo Proxes tyres covering a mint set of BBS rims, free from chips, dents, kerbing and lacquer peel.
The car has some service history dating back 7 years.
Exterior:
As stated the car is 32 years old, so as you might imagine it's not perfect. There are a few tiny dents around the bodywork and the bumpers could do with another round of back to black. There are also a few scratches/ grazes on the plastic mouldings. Aside from this all the body panels are straight and it looks great in ATLAS GREY with the red GTI detailing.
Interior:
Truly an amazing interior. The parcel shelf has survived the 90's and has no sign of 6x9 cut outs. The black headlining is immaculate and looks brand new. This particular car has a manual sunroof which also works beautifully. It has the 'rainbow interior' which is in good condition too.
I had intended to sort a few bits out over the next year or two, only I have a few other projects on the go so something has to give, hence the sale. The parts I was looking to fix and therefore need attention are:
1. Passenger electric window not working.
2. Needs a replacement battery tray (although current one works).
3. Passenger door has a rusty section in the corner, although this is on the inner part of the door and therefore doesn't show from outside.
4. Rear external window scrapers need replacing as they have lifted. Door underneath is super clean.
It's also had a 'wiper delete' which I don't understand and would reinstate, but that's just my opinion!
Please note that any interested party will be able to view the car on the ramp so you can inspect the underside fully. This car will be sold as seen. You're going to love this car because it's iconic and has nostalgia in abundance!
