THESE 1588CC ENGINES WERE FUEL INJECTED IN 1976 (80 GTE) AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY FITTED TO THE LEGENDARY VW GOLF GTI 1. 6 MK1 !!

BACK IN THE 70's MY FATHER RAN A COUPLE OF AUDI DEALERSHIPS IN LONDON ( THE NORMAND GROUP )
HE HAD NUMEROUS AUDI 100's AND 100 COUPE "S" MODELS WHICH WERE AND STILL ARE GREAT CARS ( I HAVE THOSE AS WELL )
IN 1975 HE PURCHASED A CLIFFE GREEN AUDI 80 GT (HLF 720N) WE KEPT THE CAR FOR MANY YEARS UNTIL 2002 WHEN IT BECAME TO FAR GONE TO SAVE !! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE GT AND WAS SADDENED WHEN IT COUDNT BE SAVED FROM THE SCRAP YARD
OK SO IN 2002 I VOWED TO SEARCH FOR ANOTHER 80 GT THINKING IT WOULD BE FAIRLY STRAIGHT FORWARD HOWEVER THIS WAS NOT THE CASE AND IT TOOK 13 YEARS TO FIND ONE !
KGP 281N HAD BEEN PARKED AT THE BACK OF A DRY WORKSHOP SINCE THE 90s AND WAS IN INCREDIBLY RUST FREE CONDITION WITH ONLY SMALL AREAS NEEDING ATTENTION
(I HAVE OVER 100 DETAILED PRINTED PICTURES OF HOW THE CAR WAS FOUND SHOWING HOW GOOD IT WAS )
ONCE RECOVERED THE 80 GT STARTED AND RAN HOWEVER THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAY TO SORT SUCH A RARE HERITAGE AUDI AND THAT WAS PROPERLY
I WANTED THE CAR TO BE RESTORED LIKE A NEW CAR SO HAD A COMPANY IN GUILDFORD STRIP THE AUDI TO A COMPLETE BARE SHELL AND COMPLETE A GROUND UP RESTORATION WHICH TOOK OVER 3 YEARS TO COMPLETE
THERE WAS NO REAL RUST OR ROT IN THE CAR WITH THE ONLY AREAS NEEDING SOME WORK BEING THE INNER FRONT WINGS AND AREAS OF SURFACE RUST, BOTH FRONT WINGS WERE RUSTY SO REPLACED WITH NOS AUDI FRONT WINGS
THE SILLS , REAR VALANCE, REAR QUARTERS, WHEEL ARCHES, FLOORS AND BOOT FLOOR WERE FREE OF ROT JUST AREAS OF SURFACE SCABBING !
AFTER 40 PLUS YEARS THE PAINTWORK WAS FLAT AND HAD PICKED UP VARIOUS NICKS, SCRATCHES, SCABS AND DINGS HOWEVER IT WAS THE MOST SOLID AUDI 80B1 I HAD EVER SEEN LET ALONE BEING A GT
THE CAR WAS TURNED ON ITS SIDE AND THE BOTTOM STRIPPED OF ALL SEALANTS ETC, THEN INSPECTED ZINC PRIMED , THEN UNDERSEALED BEFORE BEING FULLY PAINTED IN ITS ORIGINAL COLOUR CADIZ ORANGE
'THE GT WAS SENT TO MEDCALF'S IN CHERTSEY WHO WERE AN OFFICIAL AUDI & BENTLEY APPROVED PAINT SHOP AND THEY CARRIED OUT A BARE METAL INSIDE AND OUT REPAINT. THIS INCLUDED INSIDE THE ENGINE BAY, THE BOOT FLOOR , INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE DOORS AND FRONT WINGS , THE INTERNAL FLOORS , FOOTWELLS ETC WERE ALSO FULLY PREPARED AND REPAINTED THE SHELL CAME BACK FROM THEM BETTER THAN WHEN IT LEFT THE FACTORY IN 1975
SUCH PERFECTION IS NOT CHEAP

IN ADDITION TO MAKING THE BODYWORK PERFECT THE AUDI ALSO HAD THE ADDITION WORK CARRIED OUT DURING ITS REBUILD
THE ENGINE BLOCK WAS TAKEN TO "CLASSIC AND MODERN ENGINEERING" WHO ARE CLASS LEADING MECHANICAL ENGINEERS WITH A REMIT TO RECONDITION IT TO FACTORY SPECIFICATION. THEY CHECKED ALL BORES, FITTED NEW SMALL END AND BIG END BEARINGS , RINGS ETC RESULTING IN AN AS NEW ENGINE
THE CYLINDER HEAD WAS STRIPPED , REBUILT WITH ALL NEW SEALS , VALVES ETC AND THEN REFITTED TO THE NEWLY RECONDITIONED ENGINE BLOCK WITH NEW CYLINDER HEAD GASKETS ETC
THE SEATS WERE SENT TO STRONG & TURTON LIMITED COACH AND INTERIOR TRIMMERS IN MIDDLESEX WHERE THEY WERE RE-TRIMMED IN OEM FACTORY MATERIAL RESULTING IN "AS NEW" SEATS
THEY ALSO SUPPLED A NEW BESPOKE OEM HEADLINING
THE GT HAS COVERED 124000 MILES ALTHOUGH HAVING BEEN SUBJECT TO A GROUND UP RESTORATION IS BOTH AESTHETICALLY AND MECHANICALLY LIKE A NEW CAR
THE ORIGINAL AUDI SERVICE BOOK IS STILL WITH THE CAR
THE SERVICE BOOK SHOWS THE CAR WAS ORIGINALLY SUPPLED BY McMILLAN (CARS) LTD VW/ AUDI DEALERS IN BLACKBURN BOLTON LANCASHIRE
IT HAS 22 AUDI SERVICE STAMPS IN THE BOOK WITH THE LAST ENTRY BEING IN 1989 @ 98432 MILES !

IN MARCH THE 80 GT WAS TAKEN TO HARDING AUTO SERVICES IN KNAPHILL WOKING SURREY WHO ARE A BOSCH CLASSIC CAR SERVICE CENTRE
THE REMIT WAS TO GO THROUGH THE AUDI AND GET IT RUNNING PERFECTLY, THEY HAD THE CAR FOR 4 WEEKS AND RETURNED IT TO ME RUNNING LIKE A SWISS WATCH EVEN THOUGH I WAS GIVEN A £2570 INVOICE !!!
I HAD NO INTENTIONS OF EVER SELLING THE GT HOWEVER AT THE EARLY STAGES OF THE RESTORATION I WAS CONTACTED BY A CHAP WHOS FATHER HAD PURCHASED A GT BACK IN 1975 AND IT HAD BEEN PARKED UP IN HIS GARAGE UNUSED SINCE 1982 NEEDLESS TO SAY AFTER NUMEROUS CONVERSATIONS I NOW OWN IT !!!
SO I BASICALLY OWN 2 OF THE 7 KNOWN GT'S LEFT AND I ALSO PURCHASED A VERY EARLY UR QUATTRO SO I NEED TO LET THIS AMAZING AUDI GO
I AM NOW UNDERTAKING THE RESTORATION OF MY OTHER 80 GT WHICH I WILL NEVER BE PARTING WITH !!

THE BODYWORK IS TOTALLY ROT FREE PROBABLY HELPED BY THE MAJORITY OF ITS LIFE SPENT IN A DRY WORKSHOP TOGETHER WITH THE ORIGINAL RUST PRESERVATION TREATMENT !!!
THE BODYWORK IS AS IMMACULATE AS IT WAS IN 1975
I HAVE SPENT A SMALL FORTUNE ON THE CAR MAKING IT NEAR PERFECT HENCE THERE IS NO BODY DAMAGE, NO DENTS, NO SCRATCHES, NO PARKING DINGS AND NO CHIPS !

IN PERIOD ROAD TESTS THE ONLY CAR THAT COULD KEEP WITH THE AUDIS RAIL LIKE ROADHOLDING WAS THE ALFA SUD
CARS LIKE THE FORD CAPRI 2. 0 STRUGGLED TO KEEP UP IN A STRAIGHT LINE WITH THE GT AND WERE LEFT FOR DUST WHEN IT CAME TO ROADHOLDING AND HANDLING !
