This rare and unusual Morris Y Type Van has been in my ownership since January 2008, yet in that time, I haven't driven it other than a few test drives of just a few miles.
MOT exempt, the vehicle is in good structural and mechanical condition, the body is good, but certain areas of paintwork let it down... The new owner may consider bringing it back to it’s original Post Office specification and livery of Red and Black with Gold sign writing.
As can be seen from the pictures, it is in excellent condition underneath, with good internal and external patinated finish, with scope for further detailing.
As stated elsewhere, in my ownership of the van, I’ve never used it, I’ve just admired it amongst the collection of other vehicles I’ve collected over the years... The time has come for a new owner to take it on and enjoy it.
As you’ll know, small classic comercial vehicles are extremely rare and offer huge potential for many uses... Large enough to camp in, it stands out enough to carry signage for your business and is old enough to be exempt from current ULEZ charges that are popping up in our towns and cities these days... Initially built in 1944 for the Post Office, I have little history to pass on, however, I’m rest assured that the Register of Post Office vehicles has this van listed and should be able to furninsh information regarding it’s early years, plus they would be able to help recover it’s original Post Office Registration number. Like most small comercial vehicles in the 1950s / 60s, it will have had a second life, most likely as a general delivery or work van, however, due to it’s interior condition, I think it’s had an easy life. There is ‘ghost writing’ on the side ‘Toffee Smith Ltd. Pure Boiled Sweets’ , a confectioners in West Yorkshire who I believed used it for promotional purposes. From there is had a short spell within the film industry, appearing in the TV series ‘A is for Acid’ in which the actor Martin Clunes was seen murdering his victims and dissolving the bodies in acid...
Whilst in my ownership, I have not used the vehicle, but I have had work carried out to bring it up to a useable driving standard, which it is today.
