The Volvo C303 TGB1111 (Terrangbil, or Terrain Vehicle) was born as a military 4x4 vehicle mainly for the Swedish army. Dating back to the mid-1970s, it was equipped in service with the 90 mm Pvpj 1110 recoilless rifle to destroy tanks (Tank Killer), during the Cold War. Produced in approximately 250 units, it is equipped with the powerful 3-litre B30 6-cylinder petrol engine, derived from the most powerful Volvo civilian cars of those years. Performance was extreme for the time, as was reliability, thanks not only to the power of the engine (125 HP), but also to the presence of portal axles (minimum ground clearance like the Mercedes Unimog) and the front and rear differential locks with air depression. Also used for racing, in the Paris-Dakar 1983 a Volvo C303 won in its vehicle class.
The particularly compact dimensions (4, 350 mm in length) make the C303 particularly agile in the most extreme off-road conditions. All this is confirmed not only by the aforementioned differential locks and portal bridges, but also by the effective gearbox with short and precise couplings.
The off-roader C303 TGB1111 offers space for 4 passengers and is equipped with an easily removable soft-top. As per Volvo tradition, in addition to the advanced state of the art technology, which includes, among others, watertight brakes, safety is also held in great consideration thanks to the presence of seat belts and above all the great roll-bar that can be folded in front and on the sides of the vehicle, practically disappearing. Today enthusiasts buy it not so much for its historicity, as one would do for a Jeep MB, but above all for its incomparable 4x4 performance.
A well-preserved specimen with a few km is worth a lot because with it you can face any type of obstacle in total serenity, it can only be approached with any type of off-road vehicle, even prepared for several tens of thousands of euros. The only specimen duly registered with a Certificate of Historical Relevance, the one proposed here is approved for 4 passengers and has plenty of load capacity to face any extreme travel experience. Totally original outside, inside and underneath, thanks to the original 13, 000 km driven, it drives like a new car and for this reason it is very easy to gain due confidence. The steering is light thanks to its gearing, the 6-cylinder B30 engine is exuberant and full of torque, the gearbox with reduction gear is simply perfect. Incredibly robust and at the same time light and effective are the portal axles, highly sought after and paid for in "gold" for the most extreme elaborations which make them in fact much more attractive than the Unimog ones.
Contrary to what one might imagine, it is very smooth to drive and does not transmit any vibrations, thanks above all to the valid 6-cylinder Volvo B30 in-line. A real milestone in the off-road world for competent only, it boasts a solid community of enthusiasts, ready to do anything to own one in conditions of absolute originality and with just as few km as the proposed example.
