I have owned this wonderful US Spec 1994 Miata Roadster for three years now, saving it for summer jaunts and trips to classic car shows. I've covered about a thousand miles in that time and have loved every journey. Regularly serviced, always garaged and very well maintained. There is not a spot of rust on the bodywork; sills and wheel arches are original and in perfect condition; likewise the chassis. All panels still have their original tamperproof VIN tags.
The lovely metallic Laguna Blue paintwork is in great condition and really looks the part. There is some uneven fading in places - the front bumper had been fitted from new with a protective bra, popular in the states, but which has resulted in a slightly different shade thirty years on.
Imported by it's original (expat) owners to the UK in 2006, then dry stored for a number of years before being recommissioned and exhibited as a show car by former Mazda specialist Broadspeed (now Roadspeed) MX5. Mechanically stock and original but with cosmetic changes consisting of a genuine Garage Vary rear light panel, reproduction BBS split rim alloys and a fob-operated electric flip-up front number plate. Available between 1994-1996 in the USA only, the R-Package Miata was a special light-weight option, of which around just 1200 were made. With the later 1. 8i engine and 16 Bit ECU, it produced 130bhp and came as standard with a lightened flywheel, close ratio gearing, Bilstein shocks, stiffer anti roll bars bars, retuned springs, altered front geometry, subtle front and rear underbody spoilers, Mazdaspeed boot spoiler and the reliable Torsen 3. 9 limited-slip differential (LSD). To keep the weight down and with track use in mind, the R Package also came with manual steering as standard, offering far better feel and feedback to the driver than PAS. In fact the only options were aircon and a racing stripe (this car has aircon, working well). To the best of my knowledge this is the only example of it's type in the UK and turns heads wherever it goes.
There is a limited amount of service history and documentation, including the original US sales order, sales brochures, manuals, receipts, marketing material and so forth. Both original keys present.
The vinyl roof has been replaced, and is in excellent condition, with a zip-out glass rear window.
Mileage is under 61, 000, and as you would expect the car runs and drives perfectly. It will come with a full 12 months MOT.
Rumour has it that R Package cars received additional attention at the factory, with a view to aiding performance in the production car racing series that many ended up contending. I can only say that this particular car pulls more strongly and revs more freely than any other comparable Mk1 that I have previously driven, never failing to put a smile on my face and making for a very engaging, enjoyable drive. It feels special.
A splendid, super-clean, collectable example of one of the very best Mk1's.
