For Sale: 1983 Lotus Excel – 3. 9 V8 Rover Conversion – £8, 995 (sensible offers invited)
Originally converted in 1994 by renowned specialists JE Engineering, this 1983 Lotus Excel now benefits from a 3. 9L Rover V8 under the bonnet.
Colin Chapman originally intended the Excel to be V8-powered, but the 70s fuel crisis led to the 2. 2 900 series engine being used instead. Many have since fitted V8s to these cars – and for good reason – but don’t confuse this with an amateur job. This is a properly executed conversion by one of the best in the business.
I bought the car as a project three years ago and have carried out extensive work since, including:
Brake and cooling system overhauls
Refurbished steering box
Carburettor rebuild (can be converted to EFI if you prefer)
Top-end engine rebuild with fast road cam and lightened flywheel (video attached is the sound it makes with new cam)
New clutch and clutch cylinder
Refreshed wiring
New engine, exhaust and gearbox mounts
Various new gaskets and seals
In short, everything that makes it stop and go has been sorted – and it really goes. Mechanically, it’s strong, fast, and loud in all the right ways. It’s been my sunny-day fun car and never fails to attract attention.
The interior could use a retrim, and the door handles/ mechanisms need replacing (a common Excel issue – parts are readily available). The bodywork is in good condition for a 42-year-old fibreglass car, but does have imperfections - see photo of rear quarter.
Fresh out of winter storage and started on the button. Reluctant sale due to loss of storage space.
This isn’t a concours car – it’s a great, usable, quick, and rare classic Lotus with loads of character and presence.
