Description
The 1956 Land Rover Series I 107" Station Wagon is a landmark in automotive history - representing the marque’s first factory-produced 5-door model and the ancestor of the modern SUV. Produced for just three years before the wheelbase was stretched to 109" in the more numerous Series II, the 107" SW is a rare and significant specimen.
Its most striking feature is the perfectly square stance and upright, riveted aluminium bodywork - a visual time capsule of Land Rover’s original utilitarian ethos, where no curve was wasted on styling. Key distinguishing details include a narrower track, inboard headlamps, single wing-mounted indicators, manually riveted body cappings, absence of external fuel filler, and more.
Production records indicate that only around 7. 000 examples were built, with just 1. 266 produced in the inaugural year of 1956 - only 632 of which were LHD export models. This vehicle is #546 of that exclusive production run and was delivered new in Norway. With only a few hundred estimated survivors worldwide, the 107" SW is among the rarest post-war Land Rover body styles.
This example is retrofitted with a Ford V6 engine (condition unknown) and retains key period correct components, including the tri-spoke steering wheel, a unique stalk flip-switch and Jaeger instrumentation, featuring a 120 km/ h speedometer and an odometer reading 12, 962 km. Additional features include the optional Smiths cabin heater and the distinctive double-layer Safari Roof - offering insulation, condensation protection, and improved ventilation.
Known to have been kept many years in museum storage and display, the vehicle appears in solid cosmetic condition, with straight, rust-free panels. A full mechanical overhaul and professional repaint must be assumed.
These vehicles seldom come to market and command strong values when restored, making this a rare opportunity for the serious collector or restorer.
