Description

In the 30’s the AC production was still limited, but it had become highly specialized to the point where it could be customized to individual customers. From 1936, there existed a line of 2 litre roadsters and sports cars, including coupes and saloons, that were occasionally known as Aces. The 16/ 80 and 16/ 90 have a lot in common, and as both were built on a short wheelbase chassis with the original AC straight six producing 80 bhp. In 1939, AC offered the optional supercharged engine in the 16/ 90 with 90 bhp, but only 5 were built on a total production run (16/ 80 and 16/ 90 together) of just 42 cars. These two-seater cars were fitted out to high standards, and the top speed of the 16/ 90 was in excess of 100 mph.

Frederick Charles Gordon-Lennox, 9th Duke of Richmond has a fascinating history mostly revolving around the worlds of motor racing and aviation. He worked in Bentley's service department under the assumed name of 'Freddie March' to learn about cars. He raced at Brooklands and after WWII he converted the airfield at Goodwood to the racetrack that it is today “Goodwood motor circuit.”

Freddie March designed the bodywork for this particular AC 16/ 90 in 1936. Still yearly the 'Freddie March Spirit of Aviation' is celebrated at Goodwood Motor Circuit an event that starts the 'Revival Weekend’.

Along the lovely lines you'll find age and wear off old times. This car is by far the most original and well-preserved pre-war car of any kind that we have ever had the pleasure of handling, it is truly an exquisite “jewel” Giving the car an extra dimension which is hardly found but greatly desired in cars as such. This in combination with power and control it is hard to keep your foot off the gas. It's fast, high revving and has an amazing sporty sound.

Driving this AC is a bit of a revelation, as it is easy to handle and very comfortable. The brakes are surprisingly good and the engine pulls very strong. The accompanying sound of the straight six engine is simply beautiful, and the suspension can be set up from the dashboard in any position between soft and hard on both front and rear axle. And this in 1938 !

The car is in beautiful condition and drives so well,

Black patinated paint with black perfectly weathered leather trim. Repaired but not restored.
This car makes the hairs on my neck stand up when I look at it, A once in a lifetime opportunity!

The whole reason this car is for sale is because it is too special and original to use on the hard rallies that the owner wanted to do.
Gentle rallies and general use it is perfect but please look after this Jewel.
