For sale is my 1991 J plate VW Golf GTI MK2 20VT 3DR.
Finished in the rare & desirable Brilliant black metallic LA9V ( available only in 1991/ 92). It is not the ordinary black, LA9V appears grey & charcoal in certain light, it really is stunning. The shell has only done 102, 000 , whist the engine is on around 90, 000 miles. I am selling it with the position of it needing a few things to get it back on the road. MOT only expired a few months ago, so it won’t be too much a job for someone to get it back on road. I just don’t have the time or space to get it done.
It has undergone an extensive engine conversion a few years ago prior to my ownership. The Mk2 is now running a complete 1. 8T AUQ conversion. It runs absolutely spot on & starts up first time. It has been mapped by Mallory performance, producing a very strong 298 BHP ( Dyno printout present). A complete donor vehicle was purchased & used for the conversion. It is running the AUQ engine & 02J box complete from the donor along with the wiring loom & ECU (Approx 90k miles on engine). The wiring loom has been professionally converted & integrated so it plugs into the factory CE2 Mk2 fusebox & allows the original mk2 dash to work. In addition, it is now fitted with a hydraulic pedal box from a corrado to allow the use of hydraulic clutch. Within the last 1000 miles, it has had a new cambelt & water pump. At the time of conversion, the engine bay was fully painted & is still immaculate.
The engine is running 298 BHP & the supporting mods are as follows:
-Remap carried out by Mallory performance.
-K03s Hybrid turbocharger
-Uprated injectors
-CG Motorsport clutch
-Custom 3” downpipe & full exhaust system ( OEM tips)
-Large Front mount intercooler
-Alloy radiator along with slimline cooling fan
-Oversize TIP with pro-ram air filter
-R8 coils conversion
-Mk4 shifter tower
-Vibratechnic engine mounts
The shell is the best I’ve ever owned. It is absolutely rock solid. The sills, jacking points, floor pan , battery tray & chassis legs are mint ( photos uploaded). As for the quarter panels, front wings & scuttle panel, they are the same. The only rust bubbles I can note of is being one on the bottom of the passenger door & a very small one on the fuel filler neck ( metal is still rock solid & is just superficial) I currently own several Mk2’s & this is by far the most original & solid shell from them all. It has never been welded. The Mk2 was dry stored for 10 years prior to the engine conversion ( this is proven by MOT history ) & also a factor as to why the shell is so solid.
The paintwork is great for its age. The engine bay has been painted & is still looking new. The only blemishes to note of is there is 2x 50p size dents on the driver side quarter ( this would be an easy job for Paint-less dent removal specialist) and one or 2 small ones on the driver door ( again PDR will sort that). It is 35 years old so there might be the odd blemish , but bearing that in mind, it’s nice.
I have a complete history folder with stacks of invoices. Nearly every MOT certificate is present. The original service booklet is present too.
Now then, onto the things which it needs to get it back on road:
-The clutch & brakes need bleeding. The brake pedal feels to have a lot of air & same for the clutch. The clutch biting point is low & requires several pumps to build the pressure to select gear, I was told this is due to the clutch master or slave cylinder . Previous owner did install a new CG motorsport clutch so there isn't any issues in that regard.
-There is a slight leak from the fuel pump housing.
-Radiator fan is not kicking in (wiring needs looking at or faulty fan).
-Headliner sagging at the rear.
-Gear stick missing.
-Passenger front floor round coupling needs repair, it’s minimal & very small.
-Passenger door bottom has a rust scab.
-Audi 5V turbo Engine cover requires locating grommets on the cam cover, so it is currently loosely fitted.
-Windscreen washer bottle was removed to be relocated, but hasn’t been done.
-Boot vinyl decal has lifted in a few areas, would be nice to fit a new one to make it fresh!
All in all, it's just a few niggles which need addressing & it should be back to full health!
All considered, it is priced fairly & is firm. With very little time & money, you will have an excellent example of a MK2 boasting a near 300 BHP 20VT conversion for a fraction of the price if you were to buy one all ready & MOT’d. Well sorted ones are going for 15k+ & this does not need a lot spending to get it near that! In addition, the shell is immaculate unlike most out there now.!** A TASTEFULLY MODIFIED MK2 20VT producing a VERY healthy 298BHP**
Finished in LA9V, a very desirable & rare MK2 colour option.
