Description

1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 Works Factory Prototype
Chassis No. 906-017

This represents a blue-chip opportunity to acquire 906-017, the second officially built 906 chassis and a definitive Works Factory Prototype, instrumental in launching Porsche’s legendary sports-racer series.

Unrivaled Factory and Racing Pedigree:
Crucial Development Car: Chassis 906-017 was utilized by the factory for critical development and homologation during the winter of 1965.

The Unveiling Car: This specific prototype was chosen for the official press unveil of the 906 to journalists in January 1966, cementing its historical status.

Daytona Class Winner: In its international debut, driven by Hans Herrmann and Herbert Linge, 906-017 secured an outstanding 6th Overall and 1st in Class (Prototype 2L) at the grueling 1966 Daytona 24 Hours.

Factory Test Mule: It continued its works career as a test car for the 1966 Targa Florio and Monza 1000 km races.

Historical Significance and Construction:
The 906 was the final street-legal racing Porsche and the first major product under Technical Director Ferdinand Piëch. It pioneered the racing-bred multi-tubular spaceframe chassis—a design innovation that saved significant weight (approx. 250 lbs/ 113 kg compared to the 904/ 6) and set the standard for subsequent winning models (907, 908, 917).

Condition and Documentation:
Comprehensive Restoration: The car underwent a meticulous chassis-up restoration to its 1966 Daytona configuration by renowned specialist Freisinger-Motorsport between 2008 and 2013.

Engine: Fitted with an air-cooled flat-six engine (with updated aluminium casings for enhanced reliability), featuring the correct twin spark plug ignition and Weber carburettors.

Exclusive Ownership: Coming from one of the largest and most respected car collections in France.

Documented History: Accompanied by its Historic Technical Passport (2011), detailed photo records of the restoration, and copies of original Porsche archives attesting to its works history.

Unique Detail: The bonnet is uniquely signed by its two history-making Daytona drivers, Herbert Linge and Hans Herrmann.

Event Ready:
This is one of the most historically important 906 chassis in existence. It is currently registered in Germany for road use and is fully eligible for the world's most prestigious historic events, including the Tour Auto and Le Mans Classic, pending a routine mechanical overhaul after recent exhibition use.
