Description

Capots Vintage, specialist in sport and collectible vehicles in Lyon, offers for sale a 1968 Triumph TR5 PI Surrey Top:

We are pleased to offer for sale this Triumph TR5 PI, first registered in 1968 and equipped with its elegant Surrey Top. Presented in a configuration as seductive as it is authentic, it comes with a substantial file detailing more than forty years of its history.

Produced for only thirteen months, between 1967 and 1968, the TR5 occupies a special place in the lineage of Triumph roadsters. Drawing on the sleek lines designed by Giovanni Michelotti for the TR4, it is distinguished by adopting the 2. 5 litre inline six with Lucas mechanical fuel injection, which gives it a noticeably more assertive character. With only 2, 947 units built, the TR5 today ranks among the most rare and sought-after models in the series, especially when presented in this desirable Surrey Top configuration.

This example is also notable for the quality of its history, documented by a coherent set of invoices, technical inspections and photographs covering the period from 1983 to 2025. The car presents a very solid and authentic base; with a few cosmetic touches and regular maintenance it will allow its new owner to present it to the level they desire.

The bodywork is finished in an elegant red colour that perfectly suits the sporty, balanced lines of this British roadster. The overall presentation remains impressive, with a patina consistent with the age of its restoration and the car’s use, contributing to the genuine charm of this example.

It is fitted with 15-inch chrome wire wheels with 72 spokes, shod with new tyres. Their finish harmonises perfectly with the various chrome elements of the body. At the rear, a chrome luggage rack completes the roadster’s line with elegance.

The Surrey Top naturally constitutes one of the main attractions of this TR5. Highly sought-after, this equipment provides an instantly recognisable silhouette while allowing the car’s open character to be enjoyed with a presentation more distinctive than a traditional cabriolet.

The interior presents in good overall condition and offers an atmosphere that is both sporty and refined. The black upholstery, paired with bucket seats offering good support while remaining comfortable, contrasts elegantly with the red bodywork and perfectly suits the spirit of a British roadster of this period.

The MotoLita wooden three-spoke steering wheel naturally complements the varnished wooden dashboard that houses the complete instrumentation and adds a particularly elegant touch to the whole.

Under the bonnet, the TR5 is equipped with the 2, 498 cm³ inline six, fed by Lucas PI mechanical injection. Developing 150 horsepower according to period specifications, this powerplant is the model’s true identity and distinctly sets the TR5 apart from the earlier four-cylinder TRs.

Power is transmitted by a four-speed manual gearbox, with overdrive fitted to this example, particularly appreciated on longer drives.

One of the main strengths of this example lies in the quality of its French dossier, accompanying the car for more than four decades, from 1983 to 2025.

This Triumph will require a few cosmetic and maintenance interventions to be fully enjoyed. It therefore represents a particularly attractive opportunity for a enthusiast wishing to acquire a genuine TR5 PI, sound, authentic, richly documented and equipped with one of the model’s most sought-after accessories.

Rare, elegant and accompanied by a particularly complete history, this Triumph TR5 PI with its Surrey Top offers a superb opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic and desirable British roadsters of its generation.
