Description
The example offered here, chassis no. 455944, is surely the ideal 912 in every respect. We’re proud to confirm that the interior of this model is 100% original in all respects. Nothing has ever been replaced—not even the seatbelts or the gear-lever knob. The 74, 434 miles shown on the odometer have been verified as the car’s original mileage.
It was found that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer then ordered a new engine from the factory. The original engine, no. 746210 (type 616 unit), was replaced by a 1969 variant with more modern specifications, engine no. 4096829. The mileage at that date, 2 March 1977, was 17, 590. The original receipt and the warranty card relating to this replacement are still present in the vehicle today. The car runs at a good temperature, doesn’t smoke, and develops plenty of power across the whole rev range. The strong engine note is down to a bespoke exhaust system that could be reverted back to original configuration in an instant. A perfect set of tasteful improvements that make this example an exceptionally performing car. The suspension and tyres are also up to date.
It drives very well: gear changes are trouble-free and it brakes on demand; overall it’s a thoroughly impressive car to drive and a pleasant place to be behind the wheel. Today it presents as a lovely, usable everyday car, still retaining all its original glass. Some rubber seals and components are original and show signs of ageing, but they remain perfectly serviceable. Others are new. It’s a very well-kept, attractive example, with the stance and behaviour of a highly authentic model, showing 74K miles on the clock, with an excellent patina.
