Description

OR BEST OFFER        1979 RD400F
On purchasing the bike there was no V5, I contacted DVLA who requested a dating letter which was provided by the VJMC at my request. Once I’d done the restoration, the DVLA sent out an Inspector to confirm bike details were correct. He was happy to sign off.
The DVLA issued a new V5 stating May 2026 as 1st registered date, with the year of manufacture as 1979. See attached pictures, please.

Matching Engine & Frame Numbers UK bike. I also managed to obtain a matching numbers with Original key, Ignition, Fuel Cap & Seatlock.

The bike was subject to a full nut and bolt restoration with new Black paintwork done. The speedo n tacho surrounds, barrels and heads are all Satin Black paint, everything else, frame etc, is Gloss or Satin Black Powder Coating.
NOS, new or replated fixings used on rebuild, the Olive Drab, Yellow Passivate, and Bright Zinc parts. Some of the original bolts, I’ve not been able to source, so there’s new items as necessary.
Crankshaft has been rebuilt, along with the barrels bored out to 2nd oversize( 0. 5mm), with genuine NOS pistons & rings fitted. Genuine Base gaskets, gudgeon pins, and Circlips used, along with new Athena head gaskets. 2 stroke pump restored by “Arrow” aircooled RD club Guru. Fully synthetic 2 stroke oil is being used. Motul Transoil in gearbox, which will need changing when engine is run in.
Regarding running the engine in, I’ve done 148 miles( see pics) of the 1st 300 required at 4K max revs, 301 to 600 miles, can be done at up to 5K revs, by the new owner.
New Avon Roadrider tyres fitted. NOS brake pads, new stainless steel pistons and new seals in Calipers. Front/ Rear master cylinders refurbished.
New Fork Stanchions, with new seals from Pitstop Motorcycles, and also had the new main & rear looms from them at the same time, very good quality items!.
Lots of new chrome done, downpipes, exhausts, original mudguards, front and Rear, gearchange, etc. I obtained and managed to refurbish a period "Cibie" headlight, with new chrome on the reflector! Nice pair of used original mirrors that have cleaned up nicely.
The exhausts & downpipes are 250 E/ F’s expertly converted, by MGN Fabrications to replicate the 2R9 original 400’s, as we all know they’re the same items just rubber joints on 400’s not the castle nuts used on 250 types.
There’s a link to a YouTube video in text, of 1st startup, and I’ll try and add another doing a short ride for prospective buyers to view.
The test rides I’ve done, have been 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, and about 50 miles roundtrips, and No issues at all. Gearbox is sweet, clutch is very light, pickup is very responsive, no doubt a bit of Fettling will be needed in due course, as they are nearly 50 years old now!!
Pictures taken at Midland Air Museum, Cosford, and on A41 journey to Cosford, also our local Heritage railway at Chasewater Park.
I’ve bought a cheap toolkit with a separate plug spanner, that’s in tooltray under seat. Along with a pair of new sparkplugs!
Also there’ll be the new Oxford Titan Disclock, included in the sale, which I’ve removed the excess paint/ powder coat off in centre section where it goes over the Disc.
It’s hard to find a lock for these type of discs because of their shape!.
