For sale is my UK right-hand-drive June 1955 Volkswagen Oval Beetle.
I acquired the car in October 2025 as part of a trade for my Bay Window. I had absolutely no intention of selling it, however something else has recently come up for sale that I would like to purchase, so I've made the difficult decision to offer it for sale.
This is a matching numbers car, retaining its original engine. The gearbox has been replaced with a later unit, which makes the car much more usable and enjoyable to drive in modern traffic.
Originally supplied new to the UK, the car has been exported to Australia (seemingly early in its life) before eventually finding its way to the Netherlands, where I purchased it from.
Finished in Jungle Green with a Light Beige interior, the Beetle still runs on its original 6-volt electrical system and, being a pre-August 1955 car, benefits from all of the desirable early Oval features that enthusiasts look for.
It drives beautifully and is very much a "jump in and go" classic. The car has been restored and repainted at some point during its life and presents very well overall. There are some cosmetic imperfections, but they add to the character, history and usability of the vehicle. It's the sort of classic you're happy to park up and enjoy rather than constantly worry about.
The car is fitted with custom-made stainless steel brackets carrying Bosch spotlights. The rear lamp has been wired as an additional brake light for improved visibility, while the front spotlights are currently not connected.
For family use, 3-point seatbelt mounting points have been added to both front seating positions, and a seatbelt is currently fitted to the passenger seat for carrying children.
The vehicle is currently registered as a 1954 model due to an import paperwork error somewhere in its history. This can be easily corrected with the DVLA using the included Volkswagen Birth Certificate.
Included in the sale and not photographed are:
Volkswagen Birth Certificate
Australian and Dutch history paperwork
Original Australian number plate
Jack handle
Radio blanking plate
Period-style dummy radio unit currently fitted
Viewings are welcome and strongly encouraged. The car is located in Tynemouth, approximately 9 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne.
