THE APPEAL

A characterful 1971 Series IIA 109” that retains the look and patina of an old Land Rover, with extensive recent structural and mechanical restoration beneath.

The restoration ran from 2023 to July 2026, to properly overhaul the structure and mechanicals without erasing the character and story of the life she has lived.

This Landy would particularly suit someone who wants to use and enjoy a Series Land Rover rather than spend the first few years rebuilding one. The major structural and mechanical work is complete. What remains is the routine upkeep and maintenance that comes with enjoying a 55-year-old Land Rover.

With her Dormobile pop-top, she is particularly well suited to life as a characterful weekend camper that can be used now or fitted out to her next keeper’s specification. If a fixed roof is preferred, a spare Safari roof and full-length expedition roof rack with rear ladder are available separately.

RESTORATION & MECHANICS

This Land Rover has been extensively rebuilt from the chassis upwards. She sits on a new Richards galvanised chassis, painted for additional protection and a more original appearance, with a new Pegasus six-cylinder-pattern bulkhead, new tub floor, new crossmembers and rebuilt Wolf door tops.

Power comes from a simple and familiar 2. 25-litre petrol engine, recently refreshed and recommissioned with new seals, filters, fluids and ignition components. It is paired with a fully synchromesh gearbox and a Fairey overdrive which has been tested and operates correctly and quietly.

Both differentials were professionally rebuilt by a local transmission specialist. The propshafts and axle assemblies have also been refurbished, while the steering system has been comprehensively rebuilt. GB Springs parabolic springs are fitted together with heavy-duty / 1-Ton specification rear shock absorbers.

The braking system has been comprehensively renewed and retains the uprated six-cylinder-specification drums with dual-line servo assistance. The cooling, fuel and exhaust systems have also been replaced, and the vehicle has a completely new wiring loom, alternator and battery, additional earths and additional fused protection for the lighting circuits.

BODY & CAMPER

The Marine Blue bodywork has deliberately been retained. Its age, marks and patina remain, contrasting with the extensive restoration underneath.

The Dormobile pop-top provides useful standing room. The hardware required to install the hanging roof beds is present, although the beds are not currently fitted.

The large, open rear has deliberately been left as a blank canvas for a simple weekend camper, period-inspired interior or more purposeful touring/ expedition build. The next keeper can decide what she becomes.

It runs on Defender tubeless steel wheels with brand-new 235/ 85 R16 Churchill All Terrain tyres.

Approximately 78, 000 miles indicated, but this will rise slightly as she is still being used for local trips and the odd run to the pub. She is a Historic Vehicle, with £0 VED and MOT exemption.

A substantial collection of invoices, documentation and restoration photographs accompanies the vehicle. A spare Safari roof, full-length expedition roof rack with rear ladder and an assortment of spares are available separately should you wish to remove the Pop-Top.

Viewing and inspection are very welcome in Newbury, Berkshire.

HISTORY & PROVENANCE

This Land Rover has an interesting history and an unusual starting point.

The Heritage Certificate confirms that it was built in 1971 as a 109” three-door, 2. 6-litre six-cylinder, right-hand-drive Export model. Only 1, 232 examples of this specification were produced. This vehicle was first supplied to Searle Carawagons on 11th January 1971.

Although most of the original Carawagon furniture no longer survives, several distinctive Searle/ Carawagon features remain, including:

• One-piece Searle windscreen
• Extended upper-body camper windows
• Deep side storage compartments/ modifications
• Carawagon jerry-can holders between the front wings
• Original under-driver’s-seat gas canister holder mount
• Searle/ Carawagon badges and surviving period details

For that reason, I describe her as a restored Series IIA classic camper with documented Carawagon origins, rather than as a complete original Carawagon.

ENGINE HISTORY

Long before my ownership, the original 2. 6-litre six-cylinder engine was replaced by the present 2. 25-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. I did not carry out the conversion, and the original six-cylinder engine is no longer with the vehicle.

The current 2. 25 petrol makes for a simple and approachable drivetrain with good parts availability and straightforward DIY-Friendly maintenance. The new fuel tank has both feed and return lines, while the six-cylinder-pattern arrangement leaves useful engine-bay space. Together, these provide useful scope for future drivetrain adaptations should a later keeper wish.

MY OWNERSHIP & RESTORATION

I bought her from a local Land Rover enthusiast in 2023 and the restoration became a project I thoroughly enjoyed. I enjoy the process of bringing old Land Rovers back to life, and much of the satisfaction for me has been in doing the job properly.

I intended to retain the character and patina of a 55 year old Land Rover whilst properly addressing the structure and mechanical systems beneath it.

That meant concentrating time and expenditure on the areas that were expensive and time-consuming to put right: chassis, bulkhead, rear body structure, axles and differentials, steering, suspension, brakes, drivetrain, cooling, fuel system, exhaust and electrics.

Where original components could sensibly be retained, they were. Where age could compromise reliability or safety, new replacements were installed.

For me, that is her main appeal. She still looks and feels like an old Series Land Rover, but the major work that can make ownership daunting has already been done.

The largely unfitted rear is also an opportunity for a new keeper. The Dormobile roof gives genuine camper practicality while leaving the next owner free to build a rear layout around how they want to use the vehicle.

PAPERWORK

The history and restoration file includes:
• V5C
• Heritage Certificate confirming its original specification and supply to Searle Carawagons
• Historic tax discs
• Extensive restoration invoices and receipts
• Comprehensive photographic record of the restoration

REASON FOR SALE:

I have thoroughly enjoyed rebuilding her, and that is ultimately why she is for sale. I enjoy these projects and would like to take on another. I would much rather see her pass to a new keeper who will use, maintain and enjoy her. I have tried to price her fairly to reflect both the work already completed and what she is.

Thank you, Archie
